Real Men of Genius: Halo 3 Edition

June 21st, 2008 | Category: Humor, Video

By now I’m sure that nearly all of you reading this are aware of my love/hate relationship with Halo 3. Yes, I play it daily and love and hate every minute of it. This video, made to reflect the Bud Light “Real Men of Genius” ads, absolutely nails some of the major flaws that can be found in the game.

What the f***? The BR’s broken.

May 21st, 2008 | Category: Hawt, Music, Previews, Upcoming Games, Video

Here it is, the video that everyone who’s anyone has been waiting for, the debut video for Guitar Hero World Tour (also previously known as Guitar Hero IV)! The video shows players rocking out on the guitar, bass, drums and microphone, something that Rock Band aficionados will be quite familiar with. However, with the game boasting the biggest track list ever as well as the ability to create and share your own songs with other players, Rock Band might be a thing of the past!

New Gears 2 gameplay footage to hit on May 9?

April 22nd, 2008 | Category: Epic, Previews, Upcoming Games, Video, Xbox 360

Kotaku is reporting this morning that Gametrailers TV will be receiving exclusive gameplay footage of the hugely anticipated Gears of War 2 on May 9. Strangely enough, the gameplay video will be debuting at 1 a.m. on GT TV.

When reached for comment, Epic designer Cliffy B said:

Gears of War 2 is awesome. Buy Gears of War 2.

Alright, fine, Cliffy B didn’t say that. But we all know that it will be awesome and will all no doubt buy the game on release.

Fans Making Cloverfield Game, Forget to Include Lighting

February 26th, 2008 | Category: PC, Previews, Upcoming Games, Video

It seems that if JJ Abrams is attached to a project that a cult following is bound to spring up. I could understand it with both Alias and Lost but when it comes to a movie as meh-tastic as Cloverfield (note: this opinion absolutely does not represent the opinions of MEGATONik as a whole - lawl) it is a little hard to grasp an insane devotion to the project. Maybe I just didn’t get into the whole viral advertising thing enough. These guys sure did though. The insane good people over at CloverfieldGame.com are already hip deep in making what looks to be an at least decent looking Cloverfield game for the PC.

While the game’s focus of snapping images of the Cloverfield monster and its tiny bug like minions in order to score points to advance doesn’t sound like the most fun ever the game does look like it could actually deliver some pretty creepy gameplay. Of course they’ll need to iron out that minute of total darkness in the video above and possibly tone down the thudding stomps they have for the “walking in air duct” sound effect. No game is perfect though and getting the chance to run around a city being destroyed by a giant monster could be pretty cool. Of course what makes it instantly at least worth a try is the fact that it will be free. Do yourself a favor and don’t read the “About” sections on their page; proper English is not their strong suit. Hit the jump for a few more vids if you’re interested.

CES: Little Big Planet Adds Bitch Slap

January 10th, 2008 | Category: Platformers, PlayStation 3, Video

Not only is Little Big Planet one of only two games that screams “BUY A PS3″ at me but it now also includes the feature to slap your friends into burning pits of lava as the above video from CES shows. One of the things I love/hate most is when you can mess up the people playing with you. Of course with Little Big Planet’s impressive anything and everything creator level creator I’m sure we’ll be looking at plenty of homebrew designs that actually require you to beat up on your partners. I haven’t played the game yet so I don’t know how it would come into play, but I’m sure there is a way that slapping a clothe doll representation of your friends into a pit of death would be beneficial.

As a side note, this video also proves that you do not have to be good at video games in order to design them. It does help to have a fancy accent. Hopefully the video is working for everyone.

Vader and Yoda in SoulCalibur IV Video

January 10th, 2008 | Category: Epic, Microsoft, PlayStation 3, Sony, Trailer, Xbox 360

Figured I would just put up a bit of video of Vader and Yoda in SoulCalibur IV to compliment BFeld’s post down there and add that Darth Vader will only be on the PS3 version while Yoda will be appearing on the 360. Guess you won’t be having that epic Vader/Yoda battle that instantly popped into your head the second you heard the news.

To me it sounds like the PS3 got screwed over on this one. Sure Vader is a cooler character but gameplay wise he isn’t as nearly interesting as Yoda will be. Simply because of Yoda’s size he is going to be completely different from any other fighter that has been in the series before and I’m really looking forward to how he plays. Vader on the other hand, while a bad ass, just doesn’t seem as interesting to me. Then again, hacking at Nightmare’s shins over and over might get a little boring.

HI-YAR! First footage of Pirates vs. Ninjas

December 01st, 2007 | Category: PSN, Upcoming Games, Video, Weird, XBLA

GameTrailers has the exclusive first footage of developer Gamecock’s offbeat dodgeball game, Pirates vs. Ninjas. The age old question, “Who is better: Pirates or Ninjas?” aims to be answered within the game … this time in the form of dodgeball. They could have picked a more appropriate medium (oh, let’s say fight to the death?), but instead chose the valiant form of throwing an oversized red rubber ball at one another to see which group is better.

The gameplay, shown above in short snippets, is not the most impressive we have seen in an Xbox Live Arcade or Playstation Network game, but does look intriguing what with all of the powerups and such shown in the video.

And for the record, I’m calling it now — ninjas win.

New Turok gameplay vids: Shooting dinosaurs is effing sweet!

November 14th, 2007 | Category: Upcoming Games, Video, Xbox 360

This is Turok, for next-generation consoles. Turok: Evolution this is not. Now that we’ve figured out this discrepancy, I can rave about the two new awesome gameplay videos recently released on GameTrailers. The first one, pictured above, may start out kind of slow, taking out little dinosaurs with a strange looking machine gun. However, it speeds up very quickly in the second half. The T-Rex? Pretty freaking sweet. I’ve always wanted to kill a T-Rex in super 3D. (Note: NOT sh*tty Turok: Evolution 3D.)

After watching the first video, I became immediately worried about the gameplay. There really doesn’t seem to be too much strategy to killing the dinosaurs, as it seems that you can just run around and gun them down. However, after seeing the second video, located after the jump, all my inhibitions were, as Jessica Simpson would say, thrown to the wind!

Huh? Some Canadian talks about Assassin’s Creed combat

November 06th, 2007 | Category: PlayStation 3, Upcoming Games, Video, Xbox 360

Hey, Ubisoft?! Who thought it was a good idea to can Jade Raymond in the interview-about-Assassin’s Creed-gameplay department? Whoever it was, please consider firing this person.

Well, anyway, I guess we’re stuck with some filthy Canadian, who happens to go by the name Patrice Desilets, describing just exactly how gameplay in Assassin’s Creed will work. Ah well, who cares if he can’t pronounce “control” or “throw” correctly? I bet he wishes that he could speak American properly.

As far as combat gameplay goes, it seems somewhat simple. Dodge, attack, counter? Sounds easy enough. However, couple this with the fact that you’ll be facing an almost uncountable number of enemies all at once, and you’ve got a solid challenge.

New Kane and Lynch: Dead Men gameplay vid; generic is … bad

November 06th, 2007 | Category: PlayStation 3, Upcoming Games, Video, Xbox 360

Yeah, I know I said that generic is good. Well, maybe it is for Mass Effect. On the other hand, this generic “Garden massacre” gameplay video of Kane and Lynch: Dead Men looks … disappointing. From what I’ve seen and heard about the game thus far, I was very much looking forward to an open, sandbox type game in which you rely on your partner for help, a la Army of Two. This video shows nothing of the sort. The bullets whizzing by remind me strongly of the least appealing aspect of Crackdown, yet unlike Crackdown the Kane and Lynch AI looks nothing short of mentally retarded.

Think what you will about Kane and Lynch, but I definitely have reservations.
