Weekly Retro Review: Chip ‘n Dale Rescue Rangers

The Nintendo Entertainment System was known for two things: Licensed games and platformers. Gamers of today will probably wince when they hear of licensed games, the retro era, being a licensed game did not always mean poor quality. As a matter of fact, some of the best games of yesteryear were based off of popular TV shows and movies.
The game I look back on today was everything listed above: a quality, licensed platformer. Chip ‘n Dale Rescue Rangers was one of my favorite childhood TV shows, and the game only my increased love for the two chipmunks. In the game, you got to choose between Chip and Dale, (But seriously, who didn’t pick Chip? Chip was such a badass.) and you work your way through an assortment of levels to accomplish objectives starting with saving kittens, and eventually stopping Fat Cat and rescuing Gadget. The rest of the review is after the jump.

In this week’s retro review (and I do mean weekly, despite the absence of the article for the past couple of weeks), we’re taking a look at one of the four Kirby games to be released on the Super Nintendo, Kirby’s Avalance.
[Note: Kirby's Avalance is not to be confused with Super Puyo Puyo or Dr. Robotnik's Mean Bean Machine, which was released on the Sega Genisis. Kirby's Avalance was basically a clone of Super Puyo Puyo featuring Kirby characters, while Dr. Robotnik's Mean Bean Machine was a clone of Super Puyo Puyo featuring Sonic characters. DO NOT get these 3 confused as they are indeed different games.]

Aside from Sonic, Animaniacs is the greatest game ever created for the Genesis. It is a sidescrolling platformer developed by Konami, and the developers were able to cram a ton of the show’s comedy and characters into just six stages of gameplay. So come join the Warner Brothers and the Warner Sister Dot…. for the Weekly Retro Review.

Weekly Retro Review: Tecmo Super Bowl

I’d like to take the time to introduce a new feature here at MEGATONik, our Weekly Retro Review. This series of retro reviews should run every week, and we will cover games on many retro consoles, including the Atari 2800, NES, SNES, SMS, Genesis, etc etc. To begin, let me reintroduce possibly one of the greatest sports games to ever grace the 16-bit generation, Tecmo Super Bowl. The game was released on the SNES in 1991, following the great success of its predecessor, Tecmo Bowl, on the NES. Unfortunately, the series withered away and eventually died after was released for the PlayStation, which received very little praise from the press. Recently, however, fans of the series, meaning us withered up SNES dead-heads, have been calling out to Tecmo to put their endless sequels to Ninja Gaiden on hold and revive the game on a next-generation console.
Intrigued? Want to go back to the good old days of sitting on the couch with a friend, playing video games until your mind rotted and your eyes fell out? Then pitch the ball to Okoye and hit the jump for my retro review of Tecmo Super Bowl.
