Hardware review: GelaSkins

May 24th, 2008 | Category: DS, Hardware, Love, PSP, Reviews, iPod

Let’s face it, there’s a ton of skins out there for your consoles and electronics that are extremely ugly, bulky, and cliche. I’ve tried several skins in the past, but I was never satisfied with any of them. Then I found a product called GelaSkins. Out of all of the lame skull, flame, and flaming skull designs the market carries, finally, I found something worth checking out.

May 09th, 2008 | Category: 1337, Deal, Love, OMG1!!1!, Retail, Upcoming Games, WOW, Xbox 360

Do you like to save money? Do you think the prices of Xbox 360 games are just too damn high? Do you shop at Target? If you answered yes to these questions… well, just keep reading.

How would you like to get 10 dollars off any 360 game at Target? All you need to do is print out a coupon! Click here to download the PDF.

Keep in mind that at most Target stores, you can find a ton of clearance games at really, really good prices (for example, I’ve seen PGR4 for 14.98 (or 4.98 with coupon) recently).

Guitar Hero IV, now with less guitar

April 21st, 2008 | Category: Love, Music, PlayStation 3, Sports, Upcoming Games, WOW

Activision has been getting its ass kicked lately, thanks to brand new EA games such as Skate and Rock Band dominating the Tony Hawk Pro Skater and Guitar Hero series. Activision isn’t giving up though…least not without several upgrades and innovations.

IGN has reported that in the May issue of Conde Nast Portfolio, Activision CEO Bobby Kotick revealed that more instruments will be included in Guitar Hero IV.

“It’s not just about guitars. We’ll include a lot of other instruments, vocals. It will help us expand internationally.”

In addition to new instruments, Kotick also said that GH IV will be the first game in which the company will use “local content and local bands.” Players will be able to play along with their local bands in-game.

I don’t think Rock Band can get away with just DLC when this game comes around…

Bethesda hearts MEGATONik; R* should too

March 20th, 2008 | Category: Gaming Industry, Love, Previews, Upcoming Games, WOW, Xbox 360

If you happened to pick up this month’s issue of popular gaming magazine and Microsoft fanboy required reading, OXM, I’m sure that you did so based on their exclusive coverage of Bethesda’s upcoming massive RPG, Fallout 3. And, if you so happened to purchase the magazine (or receive it free due to a GameFly subscription that you happened to cancel months ago), I’m sure that you noticed the picture of a certain Fallout 3 town on page 45. The town, constructed solely out of scattered parts of a “downed airliner,” is aptly named Megaton.

I realize what you’re thinking; this is just some subtle coincidence. Megaton is a fairly common word that has everything to do with nuclear holocausts and whatnot. However, based on our love for Bethesda’s The Elder Scrolls: Oblivion, and our controversial hate for Southpeak’s Oblivion-clone, Two Worlds, I cannot dismiss Bethesda’s inclusion of a town named Megaton as anything less than a tribute to our great and powerful site, MEGATONik. Yes, Bethesda loves us, and we love them back. So … how about a complimentary flight out to Cali to celebrate our love of Bethesda with an early look at Fallout 3? Pretty please?

And Rockstar, remember that time when we loved you? Naming a burrough of Liberty City after MEGATONik (I’d call it MegaSKANKik) would fit quite nicely, I do believe.

Super Smash Bros. Brawl sells, like, a lot of copies

March 17th, 2008 | Category: Epic, Gaming Industry, Hawt, Love, Press release, Retail, Sales, WOW, Wii

Nintendo has just sent word that their epic Wii fighter, Super Smash Bros. Brawl, sold 874,000 copies on launch day (March 9th) and 1.4 million units total since then in the United States alone. Apparently, this averages out to around 120 copies being sold per minute as of March 16th and it’s the fastest selling game in Nintendo’s history.

Of course this is to be expected, because it’s a really f*cking great game. This just goes to show that Nintendo should be focusing on creating more hardcore games like Brawl, instead of turning the Wii into an exercise machine. Still, I do have a strange feeling that Wii Fit is going to sell a ridiculous amount of units. I hope I’m wrong.

Full press release after the jump.

Bioshock 2 announced, backflip rejoices

March 12th, 2008 | Category: Love, Microsoft, Upcoming Games, Xbox 360

Take-Two Games has announced that a sequel to BioShock is on its way and will release fall of 2009. It was previously announced that 2K games desires to release a BioShock game every two years, and it seems like they are doing just that.

BioShock 2 will be developed by 2K Marin studio, which was made by a group of BioShock developers late last year. Ken Levine, lead of developer 2K Boston, who developed the first game, has been revealed to be involved with the sequel, because Take-Two says “[Levine] is critical to BioShock.” It is unclear what Levine will be doing with 2K Marin in development at this time because of new projects 2K Boston is undergoing.

Someone alert backflip because I’m sure he’ll be jumping for joy at this exciting news.

Will Arnett discusses Call of Duty 4 with Conan O’Brien

February 29th, 2008 | Category: 1337, Humor, Love, PlayStation 3, Pwned, Video, Xbox 360, Xbox Live

Will Arnett of Arrested Development fame was on Late Night with Conan O’Brien a few days ago, and he started talking about Call of Duty 4. Whether you’re a fan of Call of Duty 4, Arrested Development, or both (or neither, but in that case you’re missing out on not only one of the best games of 2007 but one of the funniest shows ever), you should be able to appreciate the short clip.

Still, no matter what you think of it, there’s one things we should all be able to agree on: “Call of Duty 4 is not gonna play itself.” Will Arnett speaks the truth, and fortunately, Call of Duty 4 certainly seems to get around.

Castle Crashers: [Insert untypable squeals of joy here]

February 28th, 2008 | Category: Hawt, Love, Upcoming Games, Video, XBLA

Dan Paladin ranks up there as the world’s biggest tease. His previous game, Alien Hominid was an awesome sidescrolling arcade shooter, with difficulty reminiscent of the original Contra and a charming art style to boot. But that was just a warm-up for his newest opus, Castle Crashers. The isometric sidescroller could very well be a long-lost brother of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles arcade game. Both have four different characters, each with their own unique fighting style, and cooperative play to increase the degree of awesomeness to dangerous levels.

The above video demonstrates some of the amazing animations and moves that games showcases, as well as a possibly massive overworld map, and the leveling system in the game. Screw GTA and Metal Gear Solid; Castle Crashers is my most-anticipated game of 2008.

Check out the “I Love Rock Band Valentine’s Day Bash” on Wednesday the 13th… at 12 PM (at least in Orlando)

February 09th, 2008 | Category: Band Practice, Event, Hawt, Love, Music, PlayStation 3, Press release, WHY??, Xbox 360

Two hours ago, a press release showed up in my inbox detailing a Valentine’s Day Rock Band tournament organized by 1up, MTV Games and Virgin Megastores, and for the life of me I cannot decide why in the world they would possibly hold the “main event” of the tournament, at the Virgin Megastore inside of Downtown Disney in Orlando, at 12 PM in the afternoon on Wednesday, the day BEFORE Valentine’s Day.

Really, if they couldn’t get in there on the day of V-Day, couldn’t it at least be held off until Friday night or Saturday afternoon (or even at the same time as the other locations)? It just seems ridiculous to expect that a decent amount of people will show up right in the middle of the day, while the kids are in school and everyone else is at work, to come to Disney World to compete in a Rock Band tournament, even when a $500 gift card and “other cool prizes” are at stake.

The tournament will also take place in NYC and Hollywood at a reasonable time, 6:30 PM.

Hit the jump for the press release which contains all the details about the tourney and addresses for all 3 locations.

Valve Confirms The Return Of Portal, “…Is A Lie” Jokes Follow

January 31st, 2008 | Category: Epic, Hawt, I creamed myself, Love, OMG1!!1!, Puzzle

Delicious cake

If you asked me what my favorite game of 2007 was, I would have to tell you Portal. That’s saying a lot considering ‘07 saw the releases of Call of Duty 4, Halo 3, Bioshock, Super Mario Galaxy, Uncharted: Drake’s Fortune, and others. But Portal was the only game that made me look at gameplay in a different perspective. As with any semi-successful IP, it was only a matter of time before we would hear of a sequel.

Well, it seems as if the matter of time has passed for Portal, as Valve spokesperson Doug Lombardi, speaking to Eurogamer, confirmed, “There’ll be more Portal, for sure.” This is where I would step in and ask, what exactly do they mean more Portal? Because you just can’t throw in some more rooms and call it an expansion/sequel. Portal is a self-contained experience, with a definite beginning and end. But Lombardi goes on to assure us that it won’t just be “a bunch of new puzzles.” No concrete details are in place, but one can only hope that they’ll take it carefully with Portal 2, and give us another GOTY competitor.

Weekly Retro Review: Chip ‘n Dale Rescue Rangers

January 24th, 2008 | Category: I creamed myself, Love, Platformers, Retro, Retro Review

Chp ‘n Dale Rescue Rangers

The Nintendo Entertainment System was known for two things: Licensed games and platformers. Gamers of today will probably wince when they hear of licensed games, the retro era, being a licensed game did not always mean poor quality. As a matter of fact, some of the best games of yesteryear were based off of popular TV shows and movies.

The game I look back on today was everything listed above: a quality, licensed platformer. Chip ‘n Dale Rescue Rangers was one of my favorite childhood TV shows, and the game only my increased love for the two chipmunks. In the game, you got to choose between Chip and Dale, (But seriously, who didn’t pick Chip? Chip was such a badass.) and you work your way through an assortment of levels to accomplish objectives starting with saving kittens, and eventually stopping Fat Cat and rescuing Gadget. The rest of the review is after the jump.

Iwata Takes High Road, Apologizes For Brawl Delays

January 22nd, 2008 | Category: Gaming Industry, Interviews, Japan, Love, Wii

Satoru Iwata Pic

In the life of the Wii, no game has been more hyped than Super Smash Bros. Brawl, follow up to the cult hit Super Smash Bros Melee. With so much anticipation, it’s no wonder how upset fans were both times it was delayed, the first time from Dec 3, 2007 to Feb 10, 2008, and again back to March 9, 2008. Most of the time, when a development team is forced to delay a product, they come up with some asinine excuses, which is why Satoru Iwata, President of Nintendo, is a bigger man for straight up apologizing for Brawl’s delay. The apology comes at the beginning of his interview with Masahiro Sakurai, creator of Brawl, on the official Wii website.

“…I would like to offer an apology. With the completion of the game falling behind schedule, we were unable to keep our promised release date, despite our greatest efforts in attempting to release this game on time. I would like to extend my most sincere apology to all of our customers that are anticipating the title’s release, and also to our retailers.”

This is how Nintendo continues to be the good guy of gaming. Humbleness, sincerity, and gratitude will get you a long way in an industry that is all about the bottom line. Then again, I would be the nicest guy in the world if I had two systems that printed money. (But seriously Iwata, Brawl on March 9 or else it’s mutiny time.)
