The Fallout - Console Exclusivity is Bullsh*t

July 15th, 2008 | Category: Articles, Editorial, Hardware, Hate, PlayStation 3, The Fallout, Xbox 360

The console wars, where the scarring battlefield of two or more different factions of gaming zealots identify themselves under a unified corporate banner in the hopes that their choice of gaming machinery will somehow be the one saving grace of their identity. I am a veteran of many of the original console wars, the worst one in my memory was the one that occurred between Sega and Nintendo back in the early 1990s when it was Super NES vs. Genesis for the “king of 16-bit” crown. It is only through the wisdom that I have gained in my 25 years of gaming that I know now how wrong these idiotic battles are.

SPOGS Racers announced, I’m not impressed

April 19th, 2008 | Category: Hate, Rape, Trailer, Upcoming Games, Wii

D2C Games announced SPOGS Racers a few days back, and the press release went totally ignored. The release of this video, however, did get my attention. Not because I’m excited for SPOGS Racers, but because it looks incredibly horrible. The graphics look awful, the “personalization” looks like ass, and the generic rock music makes everything look 10 times worse. This is what WiiWare games should NOT be like.

This is Why We Can’t Have Nice Things: Mario and Sonic at the Olympic Games sells 5 Million Copies

March 06th, 2008 | Category: DS, Gaming Industry, Hate, Pwned, Rape, Retail, Sales, WHY??, Wii

I’m aware that this is old news by now. So, why hasn’t it been posted about yet on MEGATONik? Because after I read about it yesterday… I fainted.

Really, just think about it: a game featuring an Italian plumber and his brother competing in Olympic events against a blue hedgehog and his “whore a franchise into the ground” friends has sold five million copies between the Wii and DS versions.

Isn’t that just completely ridiculous? Never before has our “WHY??” tag felt more appropriate to me.

The Fallout: Complete Anonymity

March 03rd, 2008 | Category: Articles, Editorial, Failure, Hate, Xbox Live

untitled.bmp

Little Jimmy Smith is a good kid, he gets decent grades in school, does all of his chores when asked, eats all of his vegetables at dinner and is a generally a well likable 12 year old. This all changes the minute little Jimmy is allowed his nightly time on Xbox Live. For when little timid Jimmy becomes xXTeeBaggurXx all of that goes out the window. Little Jimmy is now a racist, sexist, deep throating mic abusing, singing, horrible human being that all of us hate to have on our teams. Most of these annoying attributes can be handled with a simple mute, but the one that I hate and wish I could kill people over the interweb for is…

The Fallout - How To Stop Fanboy-ism

February 20th, 2008 | Category: Articles, Editorial, Epic, Failure, Gamecube, Hardware, Hate, Humor, Nintendo, Sony, The Fallout

There is only one thing that can stop all of the rampant fanboy-ism that is devouring the industry that I love, and I pray that I never see the day where it happens. The minute that it happens I will officially be done with video games…and that is if the industry evolves into having only a single home console. Who am I kidding, I’ll still be into video games when I’m old and gray no matter what. If interested in seeing my opinons on this and how we would see the death of the fanboy, click the jump below.

Madden to Continue NFL Stranglehold

February 12th, 2008 | Category: Articles, Failure, Gaming Industry, Hate, Microsoft, WHY??

p1010034-2.jpg

Today, football fans will either weep for continued loss of choice in what games they can play or are completely amped for the fact that the Madden series will continue to own the market for the next five years.

In a deal between the National Football League and Electronic Arts, the exclusive licensing for the NFL Rosters and Players has been extended to the year 2013. The licensing agreement is for all forms of console gaming including home, handheld, online, and even grants EA access to the NFL Network and NFL Films to “enrich its game experiences.”

This announcement comes on the heels of the 20th anniversary of the ungodly popular Madden franchise, which has grossed over 2 billion from retail sales…that’s $2,000,000,000! According to the tattoo-speckled Microsoft traitor Peter Moore, “For nearly two decades, EA Sports has been bringing sports fans closer to the great game of football through the breakthrough interactive experiences of our videogames.”

He then added, “Game quality is our top priority, and we’re committed to pushing our gameplay innovation, connecting football fans via rich online experiences and delivering the most visually stunning sports games on the market.” It seems to me that he forgot about the problems that the PS3 version had.

Regardless of this writer’s opinion of sports games, EA is going to sell millions upon millions of copies of each subsequent Madden games that will be coming out for the next 5 years. I’m going to go out on a limb here and list the titles of each of those games for you right now: Madden 2009, Madden 2010, Madden 2011, Madden 2012, Madden 2013. I only wish that it wasn’t an exclusive agreement, so that the NFL 2K series could make a comeback and offer some competition.

Uwe Boll Bites The Hand That Feeds

January 25th, 2008 | Category: Failure, Hate, Interviews, Movies, WTF?

Uwe Boll is an idiot

Chances are, if you’re a gamer, you have at least one reason to hate, or at the very least dislike, Uwe Boll. The man has done everything from making horrible movies based on games such as Bloodrayne, House of the Dead, and Alone in the Dark, to beating up film critics, and now he’s done even more to give us a reason to scorn him.

Recently Boll was on Red Eye with Greg Gutfeld on Fox News, and he had some pretty condemning remarks about our favorite hobby. In an attempt to defend his terrible movies, he had this to say:

A lot of video games have no story. I did the movie House of the Dead and got bashed and I said, what were you expecting, Schindler’s List? …I don’t know what they were expecting if you make a movie based on an ego shooter where you kill ninety minutes of people non-stop.”

Ugh. Here we have a man who takes all of his “inspiration” (and I use the word very lightly) from games, and then turns around and slaps them in the face. I am becoming more and more convinced that Uwe Boll is not only a failure at making movies, but just completely a failure at life. When you can’t defend your works without resorting to petty excuses and mudslinging, then you should probably quit what you’re doing.

Rock Band instruments coming in February and April

January 25th, 2008 | Category: Failure, Hardware, Hate, Microsoft, PlayStation 2, PlayStation 3, Rape, Retail, Sony, Xbox 360

FINALLY, EA has announced that they will be selling Rock Band drums and Rock Band guitars separately. The drum kit will be arriving in stores two days before Valentine’s, February 12th, for the price of $79.99, while the guitars are coming in April for $59.99. This marks the first time wireless guitars will be of use on the Xbox 360 version of Rock Band. There is no word on whether or not the company will be selling microphones yet.

Money-milking EA sure has put a steep price on their controllers, especially since the game bundle with a guitar, mic, and drum kit included, costs $169.99. If you do the math, or if you simply glance at the prices for the equipment, you’ll notice that this is a total ripoff. If you don’t already own the game, you’re better off buying the bundle. If you do and you’re looking for another instrument, I suggest using Ebay. These prices are just too bad.

Video Games, One Hell Of A Drug

January 19th, 2008 | Category: Editorial, Failure, Hate, WTF?

Drug Shoop

Ever since their arrival in the 80’s, video games have been parent’s and the media’s favorite scapegoat for a number of problems. From Jack Thompson to Hilary Rodham Clinton, politicians have made attacking video games, quite literally, their day jobs. But never before have I seen such unbridled hate as Janice Turner, writer for The Times, who recently wrote an article attacking all things fun and enjoyable, but most scathingly video games.

…I refuse to buy [my kids] portable gaming consoles, Xboxes, GameCubes, PS2s. These are Satan’s Sudoku, crack cocaine of the brain. Even the crappiest cartoon or lamest soap teaches a child about character, plot, drama, humour, life. Playing videogames, children are mentally imprisoned, wired into their evil creators’ brains.

First off, this bitch knows nothing about video games, as witnessed by calling PS2’s and the others “portable”. That’s the heaviest damn portable gaming system I’ve ever played. Furthermore, the fact that she thinks that Days of Our Lives has more plot than a game such as Portal or Mass Effect proves to me without a doubt that this lady (and I use the term loosely) is completely ignorant about her subject matter. I can just picture this woman as the mom from The Waterboy, and God do I pity her children.

Super Smash Bros. Brawl Delayed Again, Fans Scream SAKURAAIIIII!!!!

January 15th, 2008 | Category: Hate, Launch, Nintendo, Upcoming Games, WHY??, Wii

Oh, woe is me! Woe is beside me! Here I was, all excited because Smash was coming in less than a month, and then THIS happens:

Why?!!!! It looks like Japan’s delay was a little less severe, pushing the game back one measly week. Ugh… this is just terrible. Oh well, I guess that I really would prefer to get a game that’s all shiny and polished than one that’s rushed, but still..!

Actually, upon further thought, I’ve decided that this game doesn’t really exist. The team that’s supposedly “developing” the game is really just making screenshots and posting them on the so-called “official” website. These horrible people are just going to keep pushing the game back a month, dangling their delicious carrot in front of us like the obedient horses that we are. Sakurai, you are one sadistic sonuvabitch.

Clinton Will Regulate Games If Elected

December 23rd, 2007 | Category: Failure, Gaming Industry, Hate, Politics, Sales

I Want YOU…to stop having rights.

While it may have been proven that most gamers don’t care about gaming’s right of free speech this doesn’t mean that our President shouldn’t. This is why, as a registered Democrat, Hilary Clinton has just lost my vote in the primary. She recently responded, late, to Common Sense Media’s survey on how the presidential candidates would deal with gaming rights. All her fellow democrats that responded said they would be fine with letting the industry regulate itself as they thought it was doing a good job and parental education was the place to focus their attention. Clinton, on the other hand, had this to say:

When I am president, I will work to protect children from inappropriate video game content.

Of course this shouldn’t come as a surprise as Clinton already introduced a bill that would regulate game sales two years ago which was oh-so benignly titled the Family Entertainment Protection Act. This is something to strongly consider when choosing who you vote for as changes like this will effect everyone, not just gamers. For the full run down on responses, which every gamer should read before voting, go here.

The new Guitar Hero III DLC will make you want to rip your ears off

December 20th, 2007 | Category: DLC, Hate, Music, PSN, WHY??, Xbox Live

Honestly, I want to know what genius at Neversoft said “Hey, let’s release tracks for obscure European bands! Everyone will love it!” The above video showcases the song “Ernten Was Wir Säen” by Die Fantastischen Vier. I’m pretty sure I heard the singer say stuff about showers and Final Solutions a few times (Oh, I went there). Another song, “Antisocial”, by totally world-famous French band Trust is available after the jump, as well as a few other ‘goodies’.

The real reason the Rock Band patch is being blocked: Activision wants more money

December 20th, 2007 | Category: Failure, Gaming Industry, Hate, Legal, PSN, PlayStation 3, WTF?

It

Apparently Harmonix has had a patch that makes the Guitar Hero controllers compatible with Rock Band on PS3 ready for a while, but Activision won’t let them release it. Now Activision says they’re more than willing to let it be released, they just want to make even more money out of it. Here’s what Maryanne Lataif, a spokeswoman for Activision, told The Boston Globe:

Unfortunately for Rock Band users, Harmonix has been unwilling to discuss an agreement that will allow us to provide that option in a manner that maintains the high standards people have come to expect from Activision

By “unwilling to discuss” she must mean unwilling to pay up and by “high standards” she must mean money mongering, as she makes Activision’s motives perfectly clear with the following statement:

We believe we should be compensated for the use of our technology

I thought people actually purchasing Guitar Hero III in the first place was compensation enough, and once they owned it they should be able to use it however they please - but Activision wants more in addition to the $100 they already got for each game sold. While it seems clear that Activision is only preventing the patch’s release for money, and they even admitted it, they’re still in denial and another spokeswoman, Spencer Saltonstall, says they’re doing it for the consumer:

We are really and truly not looking at this from the financial standpoint, we are looking at this from the consumer standpoint

I’m not sure how delaying a compatibility patch until Harmonix bribes them to allow its release benefits the consumer (or anyone besides Activision themselves) at all, but I guess they just refuse to admit how bad they’re handling this.

Dreamcast 2 idea, dead

December 18th, 2007 | Category: Hate, Rape, Rumor

Earlier this month we reported that SEGA was updating their patent on the use of the Dreamcast name. Rumors sparked that a Dreamcast 2 might be coming. I thought it was a highly unlikely idea, and it turns out, I was very correct.

SEGA released a statement to confirm that all rumors are indeed nothing more but good thoughts:

SEGA has no plans to get back into the hardware business, but we also want to protect our past and current brands. The trademark application was filed to protect our current and potential future use of the word DREAMCAST and to prevent other parties from using it in a way that could be confused or linked with SEGA.
