Nintendo’s latest menu update hates homebrew

June 19th, 2008 | Category: Firmware Update, Nintendo, Wii

So earlier this afternoon I noticed that tell-tale blue glow around my Wii’s disc drive and thought to myself, “wowwee! I bet Nintendo has another spiffy update to tell me about!” Well, it was only after I finished updating my Wii that I learned what the update really was. Apparently the only added functionality was that I, “can now move a Mii from the Mii Plaza to the Mii Parade in the Mii Channel.” Whoop-de-fucking-doo, Nintendo! Of course, this truly awesome new functionality comes at a cost: apparently I will never be able to download the Wii Homebrew channel now (though apparently the update doesn’t affect this channel if it’s already installed), nor will I be able to use a Freeloader to play out-of-region Wii titles. While this might not be a big deal for those of us in America, people in regions that have to wait for ages for big-name titles to come out (like Australia) have plenty of reason to be pissed. Moreover, the popular Twilight Hack has been nixed.

Dick move, Nintendo. Dick move.

Full list of features in the upcoming dashboard update, wakes people up again

November 30th, 2007 | Category: Firmware Update, List, Microsoft, OMG1!!1!, Xbox 360, Xbox Live

The full list of the features to be included in the upcoming dashboard update set to be released December 4th is out, and there certainly are a lot of features - most of which are more exciting than what had previously been announced. One of the biggest additions, something that has been requested by many almost every single time an update is brought up, is the ability to play back Divx video files. The video and audio playback features have been improved in a lot of other ways too, but that will most likely be the one that is most important to the majority of people judging by how many have demanded it. Details on all the video codecs the 360 can play once the update is released can be found here, and all the other features you’ll be able to use in less than a week are found after the jump.

Backwards Compatible Games Start Up screen on Xbox 360

A new backwards compatibility update has been released, unexpected and unanticipated as usual. Right when everyone was getting excitedslightly interested in the upcoming dashboard update, a whole slew of original Xbox games get made to work on the Xbox 360. Like a ninja, the update silently and secretly approached until the final moment when it was suddenly revealed. Except instead of getting a shuriken in the back and your throat slit, you get to play many more of your old games in 720p and 1080i without needing to bring out the old forgotten black box. There’s a total of 84 (popular number these past few days…) new backwards compatible games, so here is the list of all those added:

PS3 Firmware v2.0 is Up, Mediocre

November 08th, 2007 | Category: Firmware Update, PSN, PSP, PlayStation 3, Press release

It’s been a while since the last Playstation 3 firmware update, but the wait is over - firmware v2.0 has just gone live through the system update tab on your PS3.

Now you can turn your system on and off through the PSP, make playlists for music and pictures, and customize the XMB with new colors, but is any of this really substantial and worthy of an X.0 version number? It just feels disappointing, especially because in-game XMB isn’t here yet. I really hope they don’t wait until 3.0 for that.

Hit the jump for the full press release.
