The Sad State of Gaming Reviews

For those of you who recall, you may remember a post back in October we did that covered Kotaku’s take on game reviews. It is a very good read and I highly recommend you run through it, beings that it’s one of the few places that have taken on the notion that gaming reviews nowadays frankly suck. But most importantly, if you look in the comments of our post, you will see that I mentioned I would touch on this subject myself once I got around to writing. And here we are.

Game reviews and ratings have always been a funny thing. At the individual level? Well if you give any one person internet access he/she will instantly spew pretentious as though they’re an editor for Pitchfork, with a handy bookmark to Dictionary.com and Microsoft Word open to check for synonyms. When the ability to publish some sort of art, whether it be writing, music, imagery, video, etc., becomes cheap and accessible enough for the masses to get a hold of, you can expect some low quality material. A case of “yeah, it’s great they can do it, but they shouldn’t.”

However, at the professional level, there isn’t any source out there that I can say I can trust with one grain of salt any more than the everyday blogger. The review and evaluation process from these sources, which are supposedly reputable, are typically inconsistent from title to title, lacking in a fair review based on full completion of the game, biased towards their advertiser’s preference, focused too much on technical individualities such as graphics/sound/online, or ‘aided’ by large yet completely meaningless scores.

Hit the jump for my take on these problems, and if I feel like posting them, solutions.

After a bit of a hiatus, I’m bringing back some Rock Band ‘Band Practice‘, not just because I love this section, but because of the fact that my favorite band, Nine Inch Nails, is the featured content this week! Do they rock as much as I hoped they would? If you’re not a fan of the band, will you still like it? Is March of the Pigs censored? Find out after the jump!

EA Announces Free Games for Rock Band Guitar Failures

December 18th, 2007 | Category: Failure, Free Content, Hardware

Woo-Hoo!!!

For those of you currently experiencing the awesomeness that is Rock Band, you may already be aware that the guitar controllers are pieces of junk. I found that out about a day or two after purchasing the game, where down strumming doesn’t work at all. After sending an e-mail, I hadn’t heard back in over a weeks time, not that I was all that perturbed to begin with. This was the case with many gamers, however, and thus EA decided to offer a free game to those who had to wait; predictions of mediocre titles ensued.

Well, in my inbox this morning, I finally received a link to a form page at EA which lists the available titles I can pick from (not to mention today I got my replacement guitar back in, and I only shipped it on Wednesday last week, and I didn’t even ask for express shipping…SCORE!). So, are there some worthwhile games to be had? Or is it a shitstorm of bargain bin garbage? Hit the jump for a full listing to find out!

Super Mario Galaxy: The Re-Review!!!

December 11th, 2007 | Category: Nintendo, Platformers, Reviews, Wii

I’ll get the formalities out of the way; my name’s Poopface Morty and I’m a new writer. That is all.

Some of you may remember our review of Super Mario Galaxy. To put it lightly, lawl sure as hell didn’t care for it. That’s cool to me, as we all have different tastes, but it seems that about 90% of everyone who read the review disagreed with him. With my first article for the Explosion-of-Sex™ that is MEGATONik, I decided to put up a re-review of the title. Expect more creative articles at a later date, as I’m getting this sumbitch up before everyone forgets about this game. This review isn’t a direct rebuttal to lawl’s, that which I already posted in his review in the comment section, but this is my own standalone review. So, hit the jump to see what I have to say about this game.
