Virtual Console/WiiWare Monday: 8/4/08
Mondays are always good days for Wii owners. That is, those of us that still have room on the measly half-gig of storage space. Anyway, today brings 3 new games available for download. Hit the jump to find out what they are.
First is Sonic the Hedgehog (500 Wii Points). What’s that? You say that SEGA already released Sonic the Hedgehog on Virtual Console? Well, you’d be right, except that Sonic was for the Genesis. This is Sonic the Hedgehog on the Master System, and while most people probably expect a dumbed-down version of the 16-bit classic, most people would be wrong. 8-bit Sonic sports entirely new level layouts and zones. For only 500 Wii Points, this game comes highly recommended–especially to any fans of the classic Sonic series.
Second we have Splatterhouse 2 (800 Wii Points). Originally for the Genesis, Splatterhouse 2 is a side-scrolling beat-’em-up featuring a Jason-like protagonist whose mission is to save somebody inside the Splatterhouse… or something. Who cares about the story in a game like this? Beat-’em-ups are all about splattering as many enemies as possible. Unfortunately, this mechanic gets really, really stale after an hour or two of playing and the lack of a multiplayer mode means you can’t even have fun mindlessly bashing enemies with a buddy. Don’t bother with this one unless you have copious amounts of Wii Points and have somehow modded your Wii to have extra storage space.
Lastly, WiiWare gives us Wild West Guns (1000 Wii Points). I have to say, this game actually looks pretty fun. Imagine Link’s crossbow Training with a Western theme and the ability to play with a friend. Plus the fine people at Gameloft threw in wagglin’ to perform different actions, such as clearing away smoke from an explosion or pushing away a rowdy bar patron. Unfortunately, there isn’t much more to this game than a standard rail-based shooter, but I wouldn’t let that dissuade you if you’re a fan of the genre. For just $10, this looks to be a pretty solid arcade experience.
