Dear Japan: Why do you hate the 360?
Dear Japan,
I just don’t understand your lack of interest in the Xbox 360. No, really, I don’t see how you can deny a console that offers exactly the kinds of games that have classically piqued the interest of Japanese gamers. Just off the top of my head I can think of Eternal Sonata, Blue Dragon, and Lost Odyssey, not to mention Tales of Vesperia, which is coming to the 360 in a few months, too. That’s four solid JRPG titles that are currently exclusive to Microsoft’s system. Of course, Square Enix is releasing Final Fantasy XIII everywhere except the glorious nation of Nippon, but that’s only because you guys hate is so much.
But hey, maybe JRPGs aren’t your thing. How can the Japanese market not be eating the Halo series up like so much pockey? Think about it; here is a series that features a protagonist that looks like a robot, fighting hordes of monsters and the occasional giant robotic scarab, with a sexy, cybernetic, purple woman as his guide. I thought you guys loved giant robots and sexy, cybernetic, purple women! Maybe that’s just a false stereotype… to be fair, though, you were the ones that gave freakin’ Spider-Man a giant zord to ride around in. And what about Bioshock? That game had not only crazy robot guys walking around, but also the kinds of creepy little girls that have become staples in Japanese horror flicks.
Maybe it’s too late for the 360 in Japan, though. After two-and-a-half years on the market I don’t retain much hope that you’ll see the light. Then again, the PSP certainly picked up in the last six months thanks to the success of Monster Hunter Freedom 2. Is that all it takes? One must-have game? Maybe the upcoming, customizable avatars will bring in some of the Wii crowd. At any rate, I feel that you’re treating the one console made in my country with less respect than it deserves.

P.S.- C’mon, you guys are taking this too seriously. While I do think the 360 is a bit under-appreciated in Japan, I can see why they would prefer native brands. This article was just in good fun and it was my mistake for forgetting the golden rule: THE INTERNET IS SERIOUS BUSINESS!

Brand loyalty
Obviously Wonko isn’t hating on Japan, he is simply pointing out that there seems to be plenty of reasons for a Japanese gamer to be buying a 360 and that part of the reason behind not buying the Xbox 360 could stem from the fact that it is a US product rather than a Japanese product (Of course this isn’t necessarily taking into account the high hardware failure rate of the initial Xbox 360s)- which would only really be saying that Japan has national loyalty, which could be misconstrued as a negative trait, however I believe it to be highly beneficial for a nation to take pride in or believe in their own products.
As far as I’m concerned the fact the Japanese seem nationalistic as part of their culture is not a problem, in fact I feel Japan has one of the most influential and admirable cultures in the world.
*Note*
Monster Hunter Freedom 2 I believe sells so well in Japan because of the team oriented culture that seems to be inherent throughout most of Japan (that has always been the impression I have received and I offer little to no justification for that aside from game sales and the types of games or content that is generally more popular in Japan), and also the fact that the game has a lot of depth in regards to improving one-self for the better of a team.
Where as the American market seems to love to prove themselves better than one another, one FPS game after another. Pure speculation of course from how games seem to be received (Then again much of the success of Monster Hunter within Japan is partially due to much better support from Capcom in regards to online play, and previous Monster Hunter releases Monster Hunter Online’ Monster Hunter 2G’ Monster Hunter 2′ in Japan) and also from my experience with the games themselves.
Also as a gamer, I HIGHLY doubt that Wonko is ‘hating’ on Japan. Wonko is obviously poking fun at stereotypes while pointing out that Japan seems to have 6 xbox 360 owners. There is plenty of evidence to support that Japanese gamers like JRPGS (Dragon Warrior/Dragon Quest for example) and that a lot of these games feature girly men with big round eyes or crazy anime-esque characters (as Japan seems to accept Anime as possibly belonging to a more adult audience as well - which America has a bit of trouble with partially due to the types of cartoons older American generations grew up with and the fact that a lot of the more adult Japanese content within Anime or specifically adult shows aren’t available in the US), hell I love JRPGS don’t get me wrong, but that doesn’t blind me to the fact that they are what they are and that they are popular in Japan.
….Here’s the biggest kicker, the title of Wonko’s article is there to provoke interest and a reaction so that you want to actually read the article, so apparently in your case it was a marginal success.

I think the problem is the lack of different genres in the 360, clearly the rpg front is growing stronger, but what about the dating simulators? turn-battle strategic games? japanese graphic adventures? heck.. there are so many weird genres is japan, RPGS are not the only thing japanese people play..

I can understand some things that they like, but I do have to agree that they probably want a higher technology item than the Xbox360. Not that it isn’t high tech, but PS3 is also a Blu-Ray which is one reason for attraction. Also, many Japanese (At least in my opinion, so don’t quote me) want me than a machine which is largely dominated by shooters, and whatnot.

Seriously though, let’s not get all Japan vs. Us just because they don’t like some of the games US developers pump out. There’s really nothing wrong with Japan not liking the Halo series…really.

Dear USA? Why so much hate for the PS3? Your screwed in 3 years with the 360 (or less) and the difference in price between the ps3 and 360 isnt enough to cover money wasted on games that are no longer in use because of a broken console. It’s because first impression lasts in japan. Store owners who sell 360 to customers that breakdown are ashamed and feels that it’s their fault by selling faulty hardware. So if youre a hardcore and want to buy a 360 like in Medio or Geo they will clearly state to you that “It may broke or something do still want to buy it?”. And Japanese don’t like returning broken stuff in stores because it’s mendoukusai.
360 has decent games (thats why I have one) and thats its saving factor. However, I dont understand why poeple stand firm and support it when it has so many unignorable problems. Especially when it is a console from a company thats policy is to use money to become the leader of the market and then screw the cusotmers with poor quality products. So I say, dont let the 360 win. Its best if it remains a competition.
Some things to consider:
1) While a higher percentage of the population plays videogames in Japan, most of them are casual gamers (which is different from the US market where “casual gamers” are *just* starting to find their place). And while the 360 may recently have come out with some good JRPGs, the reality is that this didn’t happen until very recently. So, unless you were a really hardcore gamer, there was no need to buy a 360 in Japan. There are only about 200,000 hardcore gamers in Japan… and you know what? That is actually about the same number of 360s sold in Japan.
2) The Japanese have a higher standard when it comes to hardware design/quality. The fact that even the DS was not able to “take off” until they redesigned it in 2005 is solid proof of this. So, a clunkier-looking system (IMO at least) like the 360 would naturally have some difficulties appealing to those people.
3) The Japanese still aren’t accustomed to FPSes. MGS4 may change that, but remember that Japan DOES NOT HAVE A PC GAMING MARKET (And Japanese Otakus are more likely to use PCs for hentai games than FPSs, hehe).
It really is just a cultural difference.
Don’t take it personally.
But if I may say so, Microsoft needs to spend more money in making their machines look “sleek”, if they want their machines to succeed in Japan. And don’t forget that SIZE MATTERS. Those Japanese people live in TINY APARTMENTS. 360 too big desu!

Why would they buy a foriegn game system that has a high failure rate… What are you xbots gonna do when your 3 year warranty expires? It is the crappiest game console ever I would rather spend 600.00 dollars on the PS3 cause it has not gave me no problems and it hasnt melted or had red ring of death. Square can put games on 360 but if there not on PS3 I will not buy them.. And why should Japanese buy a foreign machine? Im like japanese I look at what Sony is doing and follow them.. Why do the japanese hate x360 so much? Let me break it down for you.
1. Japanese gamers felt betrayed after xbox1. Many promised RPGs were cancelled and the console failed to capitalize on local games, which appeared only on PS2. Go check out the growth curve of X360 compared to Xbox1, you’ll be surprised to see that X360 actually sold at a slower pace than Xbox 1 for more than a year.
2. X360 has the reliability of a 30 years old ford. Most americans simply don’t know or care about his kinda things. But the japanese gamers are way more informed, and talked about this kind of stuff a lot more.
3. X360 is ugly and no where close to the elegance of PS3. Both of its controllers and console look cheap and plastic. The wireless controllers even come with a an ugly bulge for the batteries. If you ever go to japan, I’m sure you’ll be surprised how elegant the day to day electronics are over there.
4. Japanese gamers look for more in a console than games. PS2 wouldn’t have sold as fast if it wasn’t for its DVD player. PS3 would not have taken off if it were not for the blu-rays. Just check out the sales of blu-ray in Japan and you’ll understand what I”m talking about.
5. The hardcore gaming market has been shrinking in Japan for years. X360 and PS3 are both in the same sinking ship, just x360 is sinking faster for reasons described above.

I agree with black rain. Many Japanese are tired of traditional video games. Actually, video game market shrinked at PS2 generation in Japan. There was only fan boys of some titles. And publisheres sold same series. Imagine… GTA13!! Halo9!! … that’s now in Japan. PS3 and XBox360 looks like just only inflatoion of spec, doing is same with past century.

but one of the reason and a funny story and perspective is that Famitsu, the biggest japanese gaming mag, is beeing totally hating and neglecting 360 and backing Sony pretty biased way.
in the result, japanese casual gamers just have thoght 360 as nothing competitive and looked over it.
in multi platformer reviews, famitsu either never mention about PS3’s underperforming features and saying ‘theres no difference between two’ or even ever mentioned, they magically gave SAME score on both.
(also, not a few people over here in japan call Famitsu review a ‘Review lol’ because they doing things like gaving HAZE a 9, exact same score as Orange Box, so often. u decide its credibility on your own)
not only that, famitsu still havent put up articles on those incoming Square’s big JRPG titles on 360 in no more than a page or two unlike its past Square-favored enthusiasm.
the problem on famitsu is its honcho, Hamamura, is being really a biased Sonyfanboy as (ex-)exective director.
you should read this week’s his column. in that, he’s mentioning 360’s new avatars are ‘in 2D’ and Scene it! as ‘a card game’(its not Uno Rush!) like he never cares about 360.
and he keeps on saying that PS3 has a capability of beeing competitive even against future-incoming next-gen consoles(WTF! u cant see the strugle in current-gen right now?) and he saw definitive ‘atmospheric’ supremacy in ‘PS3’s Mirror’s Edge’ on Sony conference over all of the 360 titles shown at MS conference on E3′08 (wasnt ME a multi-platformer?)

well as an Asian American, i can tell you something which made me avoid the Xbox360.
1) the first xbox failed, at lease it failed me, i like counter-strike more than Halo period, i even like Doom better than any Halo. Halo is just not my thing, i am good at Halo, but i just don’t like it, not everything has a reason.
*however i almost bought one for “GOW” - so close, then PC version is out, gg.
2) housing in Japan is not like the US, most of them are tiny apartment, both Xbox & PS3 are huge piece of ass, thats why Wii sells better, not only because of the Wii-mote, the form of the machine is a huge factor, simply we don’t have huge living room.
3) national loyalty is some what a factor too, same goes for xbox majorly popular in the U.S. versus else where. (i use window, so i am already supporting Microsoft, and i dislike business monopoly, if the xbox isn’t M$ made, i will get it.)
4) the xbox360’s target audiences are mostly westerners, for pure asians to dig a xbox360, its difficult, why?
a) the controller, its made for Americans, no need to argue.
b) the name 360? that’s just lame, trust me, its lame.
c) PS2 beated the old xbox, because of the size, and PS2 still have game support till this day.
d) blu ray not a huge deal, but it is somewhat a factor as well.
this list can goes on longer, but what is the point? i am from Hong Kong, prove me wrong, the xbox360 is selling for HKD$2400, include the xbox360pro + 2 controllers + 2 games, it is still not selling as good as the PS3, no need to mention Wii, it sells well any where.

Crappy RRoD-hardware, the buying of companies just to destroy them and the long list of mistryings which started from the MSX, runs over the Dreamcast (Windows CE) - and the most important thing in Japan: X = Cancel, how stupid from M$ to call their sh**ty system Xbox - which translates to CancelBox. Even the first codename “Midway” reminds of bad american behaviour during the WWII. History repeats itself: American hardware doesn’t stand a chance in Japan!
when the xbox is built to a manufacturing standard that is acceptable in japan u’ll see the japanese ppl jumping on it. for now though xbox is just shite. the only reason i see japanese ppl buying an xbox is coz they wanna play on xboxLIVE with their buddies across the ocean.

1) They don’t like it because its a faulty POS.
2) Just because its overhyped in ‘dumb America’, and everyone there thinks an overhyped polished turd is worth even looking at, doesn’t mean the rest of the World are stupid enough to take interest in it.
3) Here in Europe, we don’t like it either. Just like the Xbox, its a nobody. Even worse, its a faulty nobody. In Germany during the PS3’s launch, people were smashing ‘360’s’ in the streets.

Japan tends not to buy foreign products especially when there is a domestic option available to them. Most probably don’t remember how long it took MS to get Windows as the norm in the Japanese work place, they just don’t seem to like MS very much over there. Also everyone always forgets one simple fact the 360 failure rate is not limited to just the USA, MS royally screwed themselves over with that simple fact. The Japanese consumer is very similar to the European consumer, in that reguardless of how much support/content a product has they will not buy it if it has a higher rate of failure then normal, if you think about it can you blame them? Do you like when your 360 breaks? Of course not but your already invested into the system so you have no other choice then to keep putting up with it, becaause selling it and the games is not a very viable option. So I really can’t blame them for not making the initial investment.

I was just reading a few of these and found ALPAYTR to be offensive to just about everyone. You obviously don’t know much about history… Or how to read and write. Japan is now nothing like the country it was when WWII was going on. We essentially did the same thing to Japan that we are currently doing to Iraq. We caused some mayhem and then took out their leader, and gave that country a democratic government. Let’s pretend we didn’t do that. Japan would still be a country dominated by one man and they wouldn’t have the freedom that they love and enjoy now. I don’t think Japan holds a grudge about the Nuclear bombs. Yeah, it was a messed up thing to do, and I don’t support the war on oil. But It’s just not something you should use as a catalyst in an online forum. Go write letters and mail them to yourself or something.

mike, it’s that kind of attitude that makes other people dislike the states, we only HELPED a few countries with their problems, we did NOT ride on a horse, ourselves clad in shining armor and slay the dragon that is everyone’s problems all over the world in a matter of months.
Secondly, the 360 is loud, hotter than hell after a few hours of play (But I still love my box, can’t wait for ME2 and RAGE) and MOST games only appeal to gamers in the states while a few would appeal to others. So why have some games when you can have MOST games that appeal to them? Regardless of company and price, it boils down to the games, and I really wish people understood that before the consoles were released.
To help you understand further, just look at their culture. Japanese culture are pretty much emphasize on quality. Look at those japanese manufacturer, Car and electronic, Toyota, Honda, Sony. Those are pretty high quality brand. Microsoft on the other hand, have been plagued by BSOD for windows, then RROD on XBOX 360. That’s wont help XBOX 360 at all even with good games in Japan.
Well, I’m a Japanese national, and I think all the following factors are why the xbox doesn’t do well in japan:
1. brand loyalty: In america, brands have lost their significance. In japan, without looking at the actual quality of the device itself, most japanese will still buy things from panasonic or sony just by brand name itself. Sony and Nintendo have built up huge amounts of brand value and this really helps them.
2. patriotism: Not all, but some japanese prefer to buy things made by a japanese company. Of course, this isn’t always the case. The ipod is a great example of foreign company beating out all the other local producers. Ipod has the highest market share for portable music in japan beating out all the other offerings by Sony, panasonic, Sharp, etc…

3. No blu-ray player. For americans, this isnt a large factor in determining console purchases. But I think for most japanese, this plays a more pivitol role in consolepurchases.
4. Microsoft. In america, xbox had really overcome the stigma of being attached to microsoft. But i think it most other parts of the world, its somewhat cool to still dislike microsoft.\
5. Console reliablity: The internet has really made it easier for people to share the knowledge with each other. Well before microsoft extended to warranty to 3years, it was well known in japan that the xbox 360 had reliability problems.
6. Software support: There is a belief that xbox 360 doesn’t have many games that will appeal to the japanese. Some of this is true and some of it is false. There are many games(most of it shovelware) that gets released in japan and never make there way to america. Most of these are on the the wii and ps3.
Truth is, they don’t like Xbox360 cause its American. They prefer their own tech over American tech.

They don’t like the 360 because they are intelligent people who don’t like to waste money or time. And since they already know Microsoft makes crap (Windows) and engages in dishonorable business practices, they will refuse to buy Microsoft products until things change. And its not just Japan coming to this conclusion…look to Europe as well where all other consoles are currently outselling the 360 by a relatively large margin (even the PS2 at times).

in the past. Compared to that, the console is now selling
3000 to 5000 units a week, and that is a great move forward.
