The Fallout - Console Exclusivity is Bullsh*t

The console wars, where the scarring battlefield of two or more different factions of gaming zealots identify themselves under a unified corporate banner in the hopes that their choice of gaming machinery will somehow be the one saving grace of their identity. I am a veteran of many of the original console wars, the worst one in my memory was the one that occurred between Sega and Nintendo back in the early 1990s when it was Super NES vs. Genesis for the “king of 16-bit” crown. It is only through the wisdom that I have gained in my 25 years of gaming that I know now how wrong these idiotic battles are.
I’m sure by now you’ve heard the news that Final Fantasy XIII is no longer a system exclusive for PlayStation 3, and to be honest with all of you out there, I couldn’t care less. Even if I had only the PS3 or the Xbox 360 I wouldn’t care, and that’s what I don’t quite understand. It is surprising to me that many people in the PS3 camp are feeling that Square Enix has somehow betrayed them for wanting to have their game sell on more than one console. Well, screw Square Enix for wanting to make money on its games.

When a game is an exclusive for a system that I don’t have, and I really want to play it, I will go and get that system. There, problem solved! If a game is released on multiple consoles, I pick it up on the system that I play on the most and one that will most likely work in 10 years when I want to play it again. It was those criteria alone that I decided earlier this year with Grand Theft Auto IV that I would get any game that was multi-platform for my PS3.
Does Final Fantasy XIII coming out on the Xbox 360 mean that I HAVE to go out and buy it for that system? NO! Will there be much of a difference between the two versions? NO! Both versions will still be fun to play, both will have achievements/trophies, both will probably have DLC, and both are the EXACT SAME STORY! Lighten up people!!! You need to remember that Square Enix is interested in making a profit, just like any company. If Sony wanted to keep them exclusive, they could have. Since Sony owns stock in Square Enix, they have a stake in the company’s profits as well. It’s all business and capitalism guys, companies don’t love you, they love your money.
If you need reasons to own a PS3, there are many of them. The same goes for the 360, each system has exclusives that are worth owning the system for, but when I hear people constantly lament that a game they bought the system for is no longer solely on that system, I get hostile. Absolutely nothing has changed with the game, it is still the same game, you just can’t brag and go “neener, neener” to your friends who don’t own that system anymore, and if you’re one of the people who needs such a thing in their life to make them feel satisfied or alive, then you have missed the whole point of life entirely.

Eloquently put, though I’d point out that those of us that got the PS3 for its exclusive games have a right to feel at least a little bit cheated. I mean, if I’d have known that FFXIII was coming to the 360, I would have been that much less likely to go out and get a PS3.
Your argument remains valid, though. It’s not really a big deal and I don’t see why so many people are up in arms.
Agreed, yes one of the main reasons I got my PS3 was for MGS4 and FFXIII. But I learned in the past that if you buy a system just for 1 or 2 games you’re setting yourself up for heartbreak. Nintendo and my relationship hasn’t been the same since the N64 didn’t get FFVII or Robotech: Crystal Dreams.
Yes you can feel a bit slighted, but it shouldn’t stop you from still picking it up for the system that you originally planned to get it for. Now if all the people mad that its going to the 360 buy it for that system, then they’re hypocrites and are fanning the flames of this console war just to have something to fight about. It’s all about choice and there’s no company that can make that decision for you. Caveat Emptor…
I bought a PS3 knowing in my heart that FFXIII and MGS4 wouldn’t be exclusive. They weren’t the reason I wanted mine. Honestly, it’s been a great Blu-Ray player for me.
As far as the article goes, I feel like I’ve actually heard more of this sentiment than the one it is (rightfully) attacking. Seriously, I have not talked to a single person who is mad that FFXIII is not a PS3 exclusive.
But then, maybe I just don’t talk to fanboys often?
