E3 2008: Sony Press Conference Roundup

Sony just wrapped up their show and I have to say, it was pretty impressive. Hit the jump for a declicious, bite-sized recap of what went down!

Naturally, Jack Tretton took the stage straight away to discuss the history and philosophy of the Playstation brand. He then discussed how the biggest Playstation games have come out later in the lifecycle. He went on with plenty of PR buzzwords that nobody really cares about. “We’re here to talk about genre-definining, kick-ass games,” at which point we actually got to look at some games!

A PS3 intro played and shortly after we were treated with a new trailer for Resistance 2. It featured a giant, Cloverfield-like monster and had great cinematic presentation. Ted Price came on stage afterwards and talked up Resistance 2’s “hugs scale” and multiplayer modes.

Jack then came back on stage to talk about LittleBIGPlanet, which is set for release in October of this year. Sony cleverly used the game to display some of their sales charts, having SackBoy run through a level with various bits of information. Eventually he came upon an area marked with $30 greatest hits titles, which include:
-Resistance
-Motorstorm
-Warhawk
-CoD3
-Fight Night
-Rainbow Six Vegas
-Assassin’s Creed
-Ninja Gaiden Sigma

After this, Jack went into a short segment on the PS2, flouting that there are still 130+ titles still slated for release on the platform this year. A new PS2 bundle was also announced, which includes LEGO Batman and Justice League New Frontiers on DVD for $149, which should be out this fall.

The Playstation Network was in the spotlight next with the announcement that players will now be stuck with a single PSN tag that will be usable across PS3, PSP and PC. After this, a new PSN title was announced:

Rachet and Clank Future: Quest for Booty
-shorter game for a lower price
-looks damn nice
-continuation of the RnC Future saga
-the Wrench has a detachable head with a tether beam
-can pick stuff up with the wrench
-light and dark gameplay of some kind?
-14.99 this summer

Then a PSN montage was shown right before Gran Turismo TV was announced, which allows motorheads to look at automobile-related things. Wahoo. A little bit of new footage on Home, but still no release date. The best announcement, however, is that Sony Pictures, Fox, Warner Bros., Disney, MGM, Lionsgate, 20th Century and Funimation will be adding their movies and TV shows to the PSN. Eric Lempell, director of the PSN, came on stage to talk about some of the new features surrounding these videos:
-progressive download, allows you to watch 1 minute after purchase
-takes about an hour to download a standard def movie
-looks like it’s going to be 6 for HD, 4 for SD and 15 for purchase
-service available TONIGHT
-adding new content every week

Next, the PSP was given it’s moment with the announcement of a new “family pack,” which will include a silver PSP, 1gig memory stick, Rachet and Clank: Size Matters and National Treasure 2 on UMD. The main even on PSP, though, was the announcement of Resistance Retribution. It looked like a pretty solid third-person shooter true to the PS3 original.

Next, a PSP highlight reel was shown featuring:
-Madden
-Force Unleashed
-Locoroco 2
-Patapon 2
-Buzz Master Quiz
-Super Stardust Portable
-Valkyria Chronicles

Then it was back to the PS3, where a few announcements were made. First, something called Life with Playstation will be available by the end of the month. No solid details on what it is exactly, but it sounded like it should function like a media sharing/community project.

Afterwards, comic artist Jim Lee want on stage to discuss DC Universe Online from Sony Online Entertainment. He told the crowd that he had a video clip, then proceeded to tell his life story for some reason. Luckily, whoever was running the clips just cut him off and aired the damn thing before anybody got violent. In short, the game looked like a DC-themed MMO and no new details were really revealed.

Next, a price drop for the 80 gig PS3 was announced. It will start selling for $399 this September, and it sounded like the 40 gig model will be phased out entirely.

After this, a montage was shown of publishers talking about how cool the PS3 is and that programming for it is easier now. Woop-de-doo. This wasn’t nearly as cool as the montage that followed, which showcased the big PS3 titles coming out in 2008:
-LittleBIGPlanet
-Motor STorm Pacific Rift
-MGS4
-007 Quanum of Solace
-Socom Confrontation
-Ghostbusters
-SC IV
-Resistance 2
-The Agency
-Naruto Ultimate Ninja Storm
-Mirror’s Edge
-RE5
-Singstar
-Guitar Hero World Tour
-NBA 09: The Inside
-Buzz Quiz TV
-Killzone 2

Of course, all that action was only there to get us hyped for the formal announcement of God of War 3. No details were announced, but a trailer was shown with Kratos standing atop a broken building with a storm in the background as he darkly proclaims that, “in the end, there will be only chaos!”

The next game shown was actually announced at last year’s E3, but is still worth mentioning. Sucker Punch’s inFamous give us the following features:
-play as a hero or anti-hero
-dark-looking city, ruined by bomb
-comic book theme
-guy has awesome powers

And finally, a brand new IP from Sony simply titled Massive Action Game (or MAG for short) was described by Andy Beaudoin. While a teaser trailer was shown, it looked like it was all pre-rendered so I can’t say much about the actual gameplay. Here’s what Beaudoin told us:
-up to 256 players
-teams broken down into 8-player squads
-character growth
-ongoing campaigns

That wraps it up! Stay tuned to MEGATONik as we try our darndest to keep you all up-to-date on whatever E3 news rolls in!
