Wii Store Update: 7/7/08

It’s that time again, kids! Nintendo’s added 2 more games to their digital store. I’ll just get right into it, shall I?
On the Virtual Console this week Nintendo hath bestowed unto us the Neo-Geo title King of the Monsters (900 Wii Points). Taking inspiration from the giant monster fights seen in many of the ridiculous Godzilla sequels, King of the Monsters allows you and a friend to duke it out as a pair of giant monsters on top of a city, or you can play as a team against computer-controlled opponents. Unfortunately, once the novelty of fighting as giant monsters becomes stale it becomes apparent that this is a fighter with no real depth or replayability. I’m going to recommend this to anybody that feels a Godzilla spin-off is worth 9 bucks.
WiiWare brings us SPOGS Racing (1000 Wii Points). I looked it up, and “SPOGS” stands for “Sports Player Object Gyros,” which makes no sense. I mean, it’s ok to have some sort of crazy acronym that makes no real sense in your game title, but only if the corresponding letters form a word that at least sounds cool. “SPOGS” just reminds me of Pogs, which would probably make for a pretty awesome racing game in its own right. Anyway, SPOGS Racing appears to be your basic extreme racing game with a bit of battling strategy thrown in for good measure. Unfortunately, the game only supports a measly 2-players. To be honest, this actually looks like it could have real potential and if you’re one of the few Wii Store enthusiasts that has a few blocks of memory left I’d recommend taking a look.
That’s all for this week. I’m going to go eat a donut now.

I remember playing King of the Monsters way back when. I doubt it will be as good today as it was when I didn’t know any better.
