WiiWare/Virtual Console Monday: 6/2/08

When I had first heard that Japan was going to be getting Super Mario RPG sometime in the next month or so, I was, to say the least, hopeful. I’ve heard so many good things about it and still have yet to lay my pale, little hands on it. Alas, instead this week we were endowed with but a single Virtual Console title and a pair of WiiWare titles; none of which had the name “Mario” anywhere in their names. Hit the jump to find out what we got instead!

For virtual console, the only game released this week is the decidedly unappealing Ninja Combat (900 Wii Points) for the Neo Geo from D4 Enterprise. Ninja Combat follows the same recipe as games like Double Dragon, Turtles IV, and Streets of Rage. That’s to say that you scroll along the screen beating up peons along the way. Your fighter can pick up a variety of weapons along the way to assist in the beat-uppery as well as use different special projectile powers. While this game supports a second player–a feature that can breath a little fun into even the dreariest of games–the combat system seems to be incredibly shallow and downright boring. At a whopping $9, I’d stay away from Ninja Combat.

For WiiWare, the first game on my list this week is the puzzle/platform hybrid Tori Tori (1000 Wii Points). Oddly, in European regions the game only costs 900 Wii Points. Maybe publisher Two Tribes felt that American Wii Point inflation was getting too high and had to bump the number up or something? Regardless, Toki Tori is essentially a revival of the original Toki Tori that was released in 2001. The WiiWare version improves on the original with vastly improved graphics and IR functionality. This title is getting a lot of acclaim, so it could be worth shelling out $10 for, especially if you’re a fan of the genre and never got to play the original.

Lastly we have Ubisoft’s Protöthea (1000 Wii Points). Protöthea is a top-down shooter that has the player moving around with the nunchuck and aiming with the IR reticle. This game will have the player fighting through 4 different worlds and 10 missions. You’ll be able to utilize different power ups along the way, plus the ability to slow down time should come in handy when there are an overwhelming number of enemies afoot. Overall, this looks like a pretty unique experience and I think that shoot-’em-up fans should definitely take a look at this one.

You are the worst human being ever. I was about to get all excited about being able to download SMRPG when I get home from work today. Your misleading header picture makes me sad now.
