Far Cry 2 single player will be (potentially) (close to) 50 HOURS!
According to Far Cry 2’s producer Louis-Pierre Pharand, the single player campaign in the game could last up to 50 hours. While there are games that last that long (and longer), it’s usually role-playing games like Oblivion, not first person shooters like Far Cry 2. I would assume that’s because of the nature of first person shooters; they are usually fast-paced and more frantic, which means everything is a lot more packed and takes more work to create less play time. This is also what many FPS fans expect and enjoy, and a genre that is usually fast-paced could become tedious if stretched over the equivalent of more than two straight days.
However, the wording of Pharand’s claim didn’t seem as confident as many of the other numbers game producers throw around, and instead sounded more like an optimistic guess:
“Just on single alone, gamers can potentially have close to 50 hours of game play”
Notice how he says “potentially,” as in if you drive in circles instead of going straight and explore every possible area. Then he says “close” to 50 hours which could mean he just rounded up to the nearest ten and if people can’t manage to make the game play last that long he can fall back on the fact it was just a “close” estimate.
He also confirms that there won’t be co-op due to “the complexity and size of the game,” but with the multiplayer and map editor he says “gamers will have their money’s worth with Far Cry 2.” Well, at least as far as quantity goes, so let’s hope they can match it in quality.

My understanding of this title is that you’ll be able to choose how your best course of action. You can choose to be stealthy and sniper everyone in the face or just run in and Rambo everyone in the face. This could artificially extend the game’s length, but could this really stretch the gameplay to 50 hours? 50 hours is a serious statement, and I think there’s a few numbers being stretched. We’ll see how that claim holds up on release.
Let this be a warning to developers. zizzy WILL find weak points in your statements.
Whatever, I probably got around that many hours of gameplay from the single player campaign in Halo, but that’s just because I played it so many times.
