Picture and details on Guitar Hero 4’s drum peripheral

What do you do if you want to copy something that’s already been done, but don’t want to seem unoriginal? You can always just make it more complicated, which is what Activision has done with the drums for Guitar Hero 4, to differentiate them from Rock Band’s drums.
The June issue of Game Informer has an article on Guitar Hero 4 which includes a picture of the drum peripheral, and instead of four pads like in Rock Band there are three pads and two cymbals (they both have one pedal), giving the GH4 drums an extra pad.
However, it’s not just more complicated, as there are other improvements. Project director Brian Bright says they wanted to make it quieter than their “competitor’s kit,” since it’s “loud as hell.” They will also be able to tell how hard you hit. I’m not sure how they plan to use that; the only thing I can think of is the harder you hit the louder it is, but that could get really annoying and would make switching off harder since different people hit the drums differently. They will also be very durable, although lack of sturdiness has never been a problem for me with the Rock Band drums since I spilled milk on them once and they still work fine.
However, the most intriguing difference is that the GH4 drums will be wireless. The less wires cluttering the stage the better. According to the Game Informer article “all the game’s peripherals” will be wireless as well, and I think a wireless microphone will definitely be awesome.

BATTERIES NOT INCLUDED. Fucking Activision.
That drum set looks stupid as fuck.
Holy shit. Wireless? FUCK THAT. This is getting really stupid. I would have settled for just a GUITAR hero game with just GUITARS. Maybe even bass. GH IV is going to fail hard for me.
I can actually dig the specific cymbal things they’ve got going there. If there’s one minor complaint that I’ve had about the Rock Band drum kit, it’s that some of the pads have to do double duty, for example, the yellow pad acts as a high hat and as the highest tom, depending on the situation.
Detecting how hard somebody hits isn’t a bad thing either. Real electronic drum kits do the same thing, and it makes sense that hitting something harder would make for a louder sound.
And hey, it’s also nice that they’re trying to make the actual thing quieter.
For once, I’m not crapping all over something about Guitar Hero IV. I’m still not getting it, but this drum kit looks like it might outperform Rock Band’s.
yeh i actually like the addition of the symbols on top. makes it more like playing drums.
I think it would be awesome if you could hook up two pedals, and they added some metalcore that you could do some awesome double kick stuff in.
I play drums myself and so can’t wait for this badboy! The cymbals will make it x10 better than the rockband kit!

“This thing is not going to crack.”
Did they test it on my non-drummer friends who STOMP on the kick pedal to the point they shake the floor? Or the people who smack the crap out of the pads instead of tapping? If not, then that’s just speculation…
That exactly why I think volume based on how hard you hit will be annoying, because those who play too hard will be way above everyone else. Or way below everyone else for those that play very quietly. And if you’re switching off each song, the drums will keep changing volume depending who’s playing.
