Pachter Predicts PS3 Triumph Over Xbox 360 for April

Michael Pachter, an analyst for Wedbush Morgan, is putting his cart before the horse by speculating on what the NPD report for April (which is expected for release on the 15th) will state.

He casually says that Pokemon will sell well, GTAIV will sell many copies and push more people to buy new game systems, Mario Kart Wii will drive more sales for Nintendo, as will the continually high selling copies of Guitar Hero III and Rock Band.

Now for most of us gamers, we look at industry reports and think “Well, I could have told you that! Give ME a job as an analyst!” We tend to not look at the most important thing, which is “Is MY console winning?” I’m being facetious when I say that, but you probably know as well as I do that there are people with that mindset.

Fanboys across the globe line up to have pissing contests on which console sold better and why. Hoping to add fuel to the fire Mr. Pachter has predicted that the PS3 will surpass Xbox 360 in total sales for the month of April by nearly 15,000 units. We won’t know for sure until the report hits later this month, but the estimates from theSimExchange paint a different picture. Their report has the Xbox 360 dominating over the PS3 by nearly 30,000 units.

Pachter’s Estimates:

Wii — 600,000
Nintendo DS — 550,000
Xbox 360 — 275,000
PS3 — 290,000

PSP — 235,000

theSimExchange Forecasts:

Wii — 720,000
Nintendo DS — 611,000
Xbox 360 — 361,000
PS3 — 334,000

PSP — 280,000

We can’t say for certain which person is right or wrong until we have the official NPD report sitting in front of us. One thing that I can take away from this whole fiasco is this, while the rest of the gaming community is online arguing the finer points of the PS3 vs Xbox 360 debate, Nintendo is laughing all the way to the bank.
