$2.50 for virtual Ninja Gaiden II armor, get ready to bend over!

By zizzy

Downloadable content for games is a sensitive subject. If handled correctly it can enrich and expand a game, opening up new options, or if it’s free it can be a reward to loyal fans. Then there’s the opposite, when it costs more than it should considering the content and is only a tool for game publishers to make some quick, easy money. Like when gamers were charged $2.50 just for some horse armor - or, in this case, ninja armor.

The current offender is Microsoft, who is planning on charging 200 Microsoft Points, or $2.50, for downloadable armor in Ninja Gaiden II. While ninjas are certainly more awesome than horses, it’s still a pretty high price to pay for “new and never before seen looks,” especially when that’s the kind of stuff that most games include free, right on the disc itself. Plus, since the game isn’t even out, this could easily be included as part of the game, but instead they’ve chosen to charge for it.

Making it worse, there will be three packs, so if you want all the new looks, you’ll have to spend $7.50. Here’s what the first set will look like (click for full size):

Better than Horse Armor

I admit it’s pretty badass, but the price still seems a bit extravagant. No word on what the others will be, but unless they disguise Ryu Hayabusa as a legion of hot, naked chicks or Rick Astley, it doesn’t seem worth it. What do you think? Would you pay $2.50 for this armor? More importantly, how much would you pay for Rick Astley armor?

[Update: Despite what the wording (and image) of the original Gamerscore Blog post seemed to indicate, there will actually be five costumes per pack, making the price-per-new-look much less. I still think it should have been included on the disc, but this isn't really a rip-off, it's just how downloadable content seems to work these days]

    What if it changed the way the game played? Granted you new attacks and what not? It would be nice to know where this information came from. I’m not defending the game, but it seems you may or may not have all the facts, so it seems stupid to get upset.

    Sorry, I guess I didn’t make the link obvious enough - it was from the Gamerscore Blog:

    Sounds to me like it’s just new looks, not new abilities.

    I’d pay about 10 bucks to play as Rick Astley… or any of the other 4chan memes for that matter.

    @Pimpy
    You sure about any meme? Don’t forget Rule 34…that could lead to some interesting costumes. And by interesting I mean disturbing.

    who wouldn’t want to run around as Goatse, wielding a sword from you know where, chopping heads and other limbs off?
