Eidos is making a Wacky Races video game, forgets what year it is
Eidos Interactive recently announced that they would be publishing a video game based on the Hanna-Barbera Wacky Races series. It will be available for the Wii and DS, and will feature all of the characters you might sort-of kinda possibly remember from the old cartoon series, including Peter Perfect, Penelope Pitstop, and the best villain of all-time, Dick Dastardly. Players will be able to use “Wacky Powers” against there opponents, and I can only assume that Dick Dastardly’s power will have something to do with his freakin’ awesome pencil-thin mustache.
As much as I liked watching Wacky Races in all of its corny glory when it was in syndication on Cartoon Network (I’m not that old), it seems like this is just grasping at straws. Anyone old enough to remember the how probably won’t want a game based on it, and the younguns today don’t know who the hell Muttley is. I won’t pass judgment before the game is released, but I can’t find any reason to think that this won’t end up in the bargain bin and relegated to obscurity. Oops, I just judged it.

Honestly, this seems like a perfect franchise to make a game out of. The only thing they have to do is make a fun unrealistic racer, and it could turn out to be pretty sweet. The good part about it being such an old franchise is that they’re not on any sort of hard deadline, so if they really wanted to make a fun game out of it, I imagine it could be done.
It does seem like a really unique game idea, but how many gamers actually know about Wacky Races?
I’m not sure that knowledge of the cartoon is really even necessary. The name alone is certainly not going to cause the game to sell many copies, but if they make a standout game, which is entirely possible with that license, then maybe it will.
I love Wacky Races! But I agree with Mr. Feld, i doubt that many people know about it. Who knows it could lead to a Wacky Races revival!
