EIEIO 2008: Velvet Assassin

Velvet Assassin, formerly known as Sabotage, loosely follows the real life story of Violette Szabo. Szabo was a World War II spy for the Allies, completing two major saboteur missions before she was captured and subsequently tortured and killed. So what will it be like to step into Violette’s shoes? Some details I learned about the game, though essential to the premise of the game, could be considered spoilers, so they will be placed after the jump.

Similar to another recent assassin based game, the majority of the game takes place as flashbacks and dreams, in the lead character, Violette Summer’s, mind. She was critically wounded in a battle, and confined to a hospital bed, has nothing to do than replay her adventures in her mind. After completing approximately 3/4 of the way through the game however, the events in Violette’s mind catch up to her current state, and she must go on one final mission.

Light and shadows are an important mechanic in Velvet Assassin, a la Splinter Cell. But unfortunately for Violette, silencers weren’t so common in the WWII era, so if you choose to shoot out lights, there is a good chance you will alert nearby guards. Instead, you must figure out other ways to use the shadows to your advantage, such as using cover and blocking light sources with other objects.
The final source of news is both an oddity and potentially a big deal. The developers told me that each secret agent in the old days had a hidden stash of gold for the family to pay for the agent’s burial in case they were captured. “Supposedly” Violette Szabo’s gold stash was never found, and is still in Europe somewhere. From what I could gather, there will be an Alternate Reality Game within Velvet Assassin, ultimately leading to a map revealing the location of this real life gold. An example I was given was that you might find a series of numbers on a wall in the game, which would correspond to an eBay auction for a WWII gas mask, which would have another clue located on it. It sounds bizarre without a doubt, but more details reveal this to be authentic, and Velvet Assassin could end up being one of the greatest marketed games this generation. Assassin is scheduled to be released in Q3 of this year for the PC and all next-gen consoles.
