EIEIO 2008: Pirates vs. Ninjas Dodgeball

Do you know why Ninjas win? Because they kick ass, which is why I have high hopes for Pirates vs Ninjas Dodgeball. The simple premise of ninjas and pirates playing each other in a heated game of dodgeball is one of the most random, yet coolest game concepts I’ve ever heard of. I recently got a chance to play a few rounds of the XBLA title, and I learned a few unannounced details.

First off, while this is a dodgeball game, it is not the common dodgeball that most people envision. Instead of the two teams being divided onto two different sides, the playing field is open for you to move wherever you wish. Each playable character can attack the opponents to stun them, as well as use their own special attacks to temporarily disable the other team, but the only way you can truly damage someone is obviously to peg them with the ball. Teams can be as small as one and as large as four, but there is always only one ball in play. Each hit takes a percentage of the health bar off, and once the entire bar is depleted, that character is knocked out. Once all members of a team are knocked out, that team loses the round.

Pirates vs Ninjas Dodgeball does have a story mode where the extra races, Zombies and Robots, are unlocked, but the highlight lies in the multiplayer. Featuring up to 4 players locally and 8 players online, PvND looks to be a fun distraction if nothing else. Dodgeball will be released on XBLA sometime this month, with an extra race and level available as DLC soon after.

I’ve heard it’s a cool concept, but not really that fun of a game. I guess we’ll see when the demo shows up on XBL.
