This is Why We Can’t Have Nice Things: Mario and Sonic at the Olympic Games sells 5 Million Copies

By lawl

I’m aware that this is old news by now. So, why hasn’t it been posted about yet on MEGATONik? Because after I read about it yesterday… I fainted.

Really, just think about it: a game featuring an Italian plumber and his brother competing in Olympic events against a blue hedgehog and his “whore a franchise into the ground” friends has sold five million copies between the Wii and DS versions.

Isn’t that just completely ridiculous? Never before has our “WHY??” tag felt more appropriate to me.

Why? Franchise power. I haven’t played Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Games, but I’ve actually heard it’s decent, for a minigame compilation.

I know these are 2 really popular franchises, but 5 million, to me, just seems completely crazy.

How much did Galaxy sell? I don’t even remember seeing anything about it breaking 1 million and I’m pretty sure all of the Sonic games in the last few years completely bombed.

Why exactly did Sega teaming them up for a casual minigame compilation end up so ridiculously lucrative?

One thing to note is that it’s five million between the Wii and the DS. Any word on what the numbers are individually? I’d be willing to bet that upwards of 3.5-4 million of that was on the DS.

“a game featuring an Italian plumber and his brother competing in Olympic events against a blue hedgehog and his “whore a franchise into the ground” friends has sold five million copies between the Wii and DS versions”

You answered your question yourself with that statement.
