Metal Gear Solid 4 gets a vague release date

Following the announcement that Phil Harrison is resigning from Sony Computer Entertainment, Sony has finally named a vague release date for their upcoming killer app, Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots. The game is set to drop in late Q2 2008, with a special bonus to those who pre-order it, a guaranteed entrance into the multiplayer beta for Metal Gear Online, scheduled for April.

Wow, I am so ready for this!

Killer app? I think a lot of MGS fans think the game is more popular than it actually is. Certainly, it’s big among the hardcore gamers, but it doesn’t have nearly the penetration of, say, Halo, Madden, or Guitar Hero. In short, MGS4 will be a fine addition to the series, but it’s not going to sell PS3s (though Sony hasn’t been having much trouble on that end lately anyway).

… are you serious, Dex? Of the few returning series that remain exclusive to the Playstation 3, MGS is undoubtedly the largest besides the Final Fantasy series. Yes, the game will sell PS3s, perhaps to those who have been waiting for such an opportunity as the bundle to arrive.

While it may not have the selling power of a Guitar Hero or a Halo game, in all honesty, I definitely belive MGS will be a killer app on the PS3.

“but it’s not going to sell PS3s”

Oh, I bet it will…obviously not nearly as much as the Maddens or GTAs or any other games, but this will grab those ‘middle-of-the-roaders’ who have been thinking about getting the system but have been holding off for a bit.
