Band Practice 1/31/08 - I can’t sing to save my life

By BFeld

It’s true

It’s time for the sophomore installment of Band Practice, the only place to get definitive reviews on Rock Band’s newest downloadable content. This week was a mixed bag, and didn’t really have any standout tracks. If you missed Tuesday’s update, the three new tracks were lesser-known singles from Smahing Pumpkins, Coheed and Cambria, and Rush. For some reason, though, I can’t sing any of them particularly well.

So are any of these songs worth you hard-earned money? Hit the jump to find out.

[Note: Guitar and Bass are judged on Hard difficulty, Drums and Vocals are judged on Medium difficulty. Additionally, Rock Band is always fun multiplayer, and so all of these were tested in single player, to isolate each part. A group dynamic was not a part of the review process.]

Siva
Smashing Pumpkins
Guitar: The guitar is challenging and has a good amount of variety, with slow and fast tempo moments. Don’t expect a tough solo, though. I got 100% notes on the solo on my first play through.
Bass: The bass is fast and fun, but mildly challenging.
Drums: The drums aren’t a hassle most of the time, but if you need to work on quickly tapping the bass pedal, you can’t go wrong.
Vocals: It’s tough. I nearly failed out twice.
Final Verdict: You really can’t go wrong. It’s a good song, but you won’t miss out on anything by passing it up.

Ten Speed (Of God’s Blood and Burial)
Coheed and Cambria
Guitar: Mildly challenging, but only because the entire guitar seems to be made for hammer-ons, and yet they rarely appear. Have fun breaking you strum bar again!
Bass: Not challenging, nor is it varied.
Drums: The same beat through out the song. The only skill it could possibly help with is learning how to pause during a fast rhythm.
Vocals: It’s difficult, but those who have no lung capacity shouldn’t worry. All of the lyrics are short.
Final Verdict: Skip it. It’s not a good band, nor is it a very good song.

Working Man
Rush
Guitar: It has at least two separate, mildly challenging solos. Just like the Coheed song, it has an odd lack of hammer-ons
Bass: One of the best bass parts yet. It picks up with the guitar solo, and even has a few measures where it can shine on its own.
Drums: A fun drum song. The beat is atypical at points and complements the guitar and bass, rather than simply providing a background noise.
Vocals: Grab a book. The heavy emphasis on guitar solos leaves the vocalist with a lot of free time. Tapping is no problem, though… when it decides to appear.
Final Verdict: Unless you primarily play vocals, download it.

Rush takes the top spot in a relatively lackluster week. Guitar fiends will love the solos. It might be possible that I have a personal bias against Coheed and Cambria, but you’re better off skipping it. Meanwhile, the Smashing Pumpkins made a good effort.

These songs should now be available on both Xbox Live and the PlayStation Network individually for $2 each.

Hard always seems to have a lack of hammer-ons. Compare TTFAF on Hard and Expert and you’ll see what I mean.

I’m a pretty big fan of Smashing Pumpkins, but Siva is like, one of their blandest songs. Not picking it up.
