Video Games, One Hell Of A Drug

By Woody

Ever since their arrival in the 80’s, video games have been parent’s and the media’s favorite scapegoat for a number of problems. From Jack Thompson to Hilary Rodham Clinton, politicians have made attacking video games, quite literally, their day jobs. But never before have I seen such unbridled hate as Janice Turner, writer for The Times, who recently wrote an article attacking all things fun and enjoyable, but most scathingly video games.

…I refuse to buy [my kids] portable gaming consoles, Xboxes, GameCubes, PS2s. These are Satan’s Sudoku, crack cocaine of the brain. Even the crappiest cartoon or lamest soap teaches a child about character, plot, drama, humour, life. Playing videogames, children are mentally imprisoned, wired into their evil creators’ brains.

First off, this bitch knows nothing about video games, as witnessed by calling PS2’s and the others “portable”. That’s the heaviest damn portable gaming system I’ve ever played. Furthermore, the fact that she thinks that Days of Our Lives has more plot than a game such as Portal or Mass Effect proves to me without a doubt that this lady (and I use the term loosely) is completely ignorant about her subject matter. I can just picture this woman as the mom from The Waterboy, and God do I pity her children.

Wow, I can’t believe people can be this dumb.

Her children are definitely “mentally imprisoned, wired into their evil creators’ brains,” but she’s the “evil creator.” Her influence sounds worse than any game.

Yeah, but the mom in Waterboy learned. I don’t think someone this ignorant will ever be enlightened towards gaming as she Bobby’s mom was towards “the foosball”.

It’s really disappointing that things like this are even allowed to be published. You’d think there would be some kind of ignorance filter.

…Satan’s Sudoku? Sudoku is exercise for the brain. What is this woman’s problem?

To her credit, she doesn’t flat out state that PS2s, Xboxes, Gamecubes, etc. are portables…she would have needed a colon or semi-colon in there, but alas, it’s just another quick way to use as an abbreviatted method of listing off portable consoles in one name instead of all seperately.

    But, with this gem…

“Technology boggles us with its unfathomable black magic: ”

I pretty much rolled my eyes. This is someone not to take seriously, and limit the amount of attention they are given…an Ann Coulter (at worst) of the video game world. Just a blog post to improve her hits on the site, like a typical media shill.

Her article goes at great length by attacking most modern digital media in a broad scope, rather than video games specifically until the very end where she basically says ‘video games are bad and I’m on the moral high ground because I don’t get them for my kids’ which I find to be basically the molotov cocktail of page rank. But on that note, am I morally superior if I don’t let my kids go outdoors because of all of the negative cultural influences they are exposed to, and instead shackle them indoors permanently? Or why stop there, am I morally superior if I abort all my potential children before birth so they will never have to deal with these kinds of things…sorry, hyperbole is hard to resist. This woman is off her rocker.

But I’m going to comment on there anyway.
