OLIMAR CONFIRMED FOR BRAWL!!!

…and it’s about dang time! I was beginning to think that we weren’t going to get any more news of new characters until the Japanese release of Super Smash Bros. Brawl in about two weeks. So, how is this character going to work? Well, Sakurai has only given us a small hint of what we should expect…
Like all updates at the dojo, Sakurai had a terribly-translated blurb to explain what was going on. Here’s a screenshot of what he said tonight:

As a Smash veteran, the prospect of having a character that can’t perform smash attacks in ANY situation is just frustrating. Plus, what does he mean by “short-lived?” Could this be a reference to the life of danger they lead when following Olimar, or do they just die out after a while? I assume that one of Olimar’s B moves replenishes his followers, so that might not be TOO terrible. Personally, I’d prefer it if the loss of Pikmin were based around the player. For example, whenever you use a smash attack, you expend one Pikmin. I’m sure there’ll be a B move that throws a Pikmin. Heck, a good third jump could be a chain of Pikmin that extends to the nearest ledge! Of course, that would mean that the amount you were allowed to recover would be dependent on how many Pikmin you had following you. Ugh!
Besides the possibly frustrating mechanics of this character, I’d like to point out that Olimar is HUGE compared to how big he is in the game he comes from. Like, Xbox huge. Then again, there were never any humans on the planet Olimar crashed on, so maybe that planet was just enormous. At any rate, I’m happy to finally have a new character to fantasize about until the game is released stateside next month.

Awesome! I totally didn’t see this one coming. I’m interested to see how it works, if the Pikmin are sort of like Nana of the Ice Climbers or whatever.
Pretty cool… Now if they would just add the farmer from Harvest Moon or add Captain Falcon back in, I would be alright about all of this…
Man I don’t find those aspects frustrating at all, the sound challenging and like they will make a really interesting character to play with offering up his own style of play.
Pikmin is one of the games I really enjoyed from the gamecube’s unspectacular library. This is kind of beast in my opinion, but I am still buying this game for Snake.
I’m pretty sure that yellow pikmin make Olimar fly up into the air, so that could be a recovery move.
It’s good that they’re making more original characters and less clones.
