Adam Sessler talks X-Play reformat

Although the channel is filled with horrific programming that has nothing to do with gaming whatsoever, G4TV is planning on revamping their only video game related show, X-Play, and turning it to a block of television that will provide gaming news, reviews, tips, and other bits, that’ll give G4TV a bit more credit for being “TV for gamers.” Kyle Orland got a chance to interview Adam Sessler on the new revamped X-Play, and reveal a bit more about the show’s new style.

Sessler talks about the revamping of the show:

This is the show I’ve always wanted to do. Obviously I’m very, very deep in games, and I find that many aspects of the industry that are newsworthy are very interesting to cover, and I’d like to get in the middle of it. I happen to like our show’s perspective when it comes to reviewing games, and I think we can offer that exact same perspective as to events inside the industry.

Sessler also comments about G4 and all of its crap:

I think [covering] games 24/7 would always be a little bit tough. You see other kind of genre-focused networks out there, they have to start rehashing and rehashing and rehashing. I’d just as soon see a network with a lot of fresh content that’s not always consistent on one topic rather than the same three hours repeated ad nauseum.

The new X-Play will premiere on Jan. 14, 2008. The show will now be airing 5 days a week. Oh, and fans of the odd humor of the show don’t need to panic. Sessler says “there’s still going to be comedy.”

“You see other kind of genre-focused networks out there, they have to start rehashing and rehashing and rehashing. I’d just as soon see a network with a lot of fresh content that’s not always consistent on one topic rather than the same three hours repeated ad nauseum.”

Sessler obviously hasn’t seen how successful the NFL Network has been; they repeated their same shit all the time (still do in a way), at least until gamedays, and after a while they had the capacity to expand their program. That kind of repeat programming, so long as it is done very well (unlike any of G4’s current original programming), can set up a consistent base viewership that will allow growth down the road. Besides, I don’t see how you cannot have 24/7 programming on video games (or at least enough to only rehash in the overnight hours); admitting that isn’t possible is an admission to a lack of imagination. The medium lends itself to TONS of discussion and potential programming. Also, G4 trying to market itself as all things to everyone isn’t going to get them anywhere…G4 is known for games, not much else; I mean it is probably the last place I’d go for sports news, which is why I always laugh when they throw in a contrived blurb of sports news on their ticker that appears during the shows.

Clearly Sessler seems to believe in quantity over quality. The only thing I can bear watching on G4 is Ninja Warrior/Sasuke, everything else is pure buzzword/soundbyte driven schlock. I’d almost watch the GamingHD channel instead of G4…almost. We’ll have to wait and see if G4 will actually stop sucking horribly.

‘Still’? That’s funny, I must have missed it before.

    G4TV is garbage.
    X-play is garbage.
    Adam Sessler needs to die.

All I want them to do is like 3 or 4 hours of quality shit… then after that, just have videos of people playing games the rest of the day… come on!!! It only makes sense… for the people who don’t wanna buy shit, or the people that don’t have a chance, have someone just sit there and beat a game… Fucking genius, I say…

I’m with Matt. One of my favorite shows on G4 back when it was only kind of bad was Cinematech. All it was was videos of games. Sometimes gameplay, sometimes cutscenes, but it was just cool to see all the new (and sometimes old) games in motion in better resolution than on the Internet, and it was also a great way to get to know about games that you might not have heard about before.

As for Sessler, I doubt he actually feels that way, but he probably has to back up G4’s programming decisions publicly. I do agree though, Ninja Warrior is badass.

Sessler doesn’t feel this way hes paid for those feelings its clear to anyone that watches x-play he hates damn near everything on the channel oh and Ninja Warrior kicks ass

I miss my fucking Portal. Portal, Cinematech, and Judgement Day. I loved those 3 shows.

X-Play doesn’t cut it for me as far as reviews go. Judgement Day had more personality and less script.

Guh, I can’t stand X-Play. They’re reviews are far to quick and more about making funny comments then telling me what I should play. Hopefully the new format will allow them to get more in depth with games. But I doubt it.

Judgement = best show on there. I can’t believe they cut it off and kept X-play. X-play is stupid.
