Weekly Retro Review: Kirby’s Avalanche (SNES)

In this week’s retro review (and I do mean weekly, despite the absence of the article for the past couple of weeks), we’re taking a look at one of the four Kirby games to be released on the Super Nintendo, Kirby’s Avalance.

[Note: Kirby's Avalance is not to be confused with Super Puyo Puyo or Dr. Robotnik's Mean Bean Machine, which was released on the Sega Genisis. Kirby's Avalance was basically a clone of Super Puyo Puyo featuring Kirby characters, while Dr. Robotnik's Mean Bean Machine was a clone of Super Puyo Puyo featuring Sonic characters. DO NOT get these 3 confused as they are indeed different games.]

Kirby’s Avalance is a puzzle game for all ages to enjoy. The game has players lining up blobs by color in lines of 4 either horizontally or vertically. By lining up these colors, you make the blobs burst. Line up 4 blue blobs, the blue blobs burst and disappear, as do the other colors. What makes this game heavily enjoyable is lining up several blobs by color and causing a chain reaction with the pieces and creating a huge tidal wave of bursting colors on your screen. Your aim is to burst as many blobs as you can. The more blobs you can burst, the more clear blobs will drop down on your enemies’ screen. Just as any other puzzle game involving pieces dropping down: if you go over the top of your screen, you lose.

It’s a very simple game that you can get very complicated with. Kids can pick it up and play it easily, but more mature and older gamers can think of new ways to create chain reactions and end up bursting over 16 blobs at once. It’s a really fun game once you develop your own strategies to popping everything on your screen.

The game glorifies Kirby and all of his characters, as well as a few new characters. Kirby is seen trash talking each of his opponents before every match, then is again seen in the middle of each stage bouncing around between theWeekly Retro Review: Kirby’s Avalance

OH MY GOD! I LOVE THIS GAME! Honestly, the best of the clones of Super Puyo Puyo/Mean Bean Machine games by FAR.

I think this is the only Kirby game on the SNES that I haven’t played. If you were to review Kirby Superstar or Kirby’s Dream Course, then I’d totally be behind you on it.

Still, I do love me some puzzle games…

This is actually a good game, but for some reason after like the second guy the ai was beast. I would always be winning but somehow they would always have a massive comeback.
