Assassin’s Creed bug causes you to freeze in midair; It’s just like The Matrix!

The guys over at Popular Mechanics have encountered a few problems with the PS3 version of Assassin’s Creed, Ubisoft’s triple-A title for this years holiday season. Five minutes into the first game, Altair, the game’s main character, froze in midair while jumping off of a building. The camera panned as usual, but everything else was frozen. The only way to reboot the game was to do a hard restart of the console. Apparently, the glitch repeated several times (video).

After hearing claims of other glitches, including a weird character cloning problem, PM spoke with Ubisoft PR rep Michael Beadle. According to him, the developers of the game are not entirely sure what is causing the problem. Beadle suggests disabling auto-login to the PSN and claims that (another) patch is in the works.

This situation is emblematic of the biggest problem of this generation. With every console online in some way, in-house QA teams have had their jobs diminished. It is now the consumer’s job to go bug hunting. These developers need to step up their efforts. Assassin’s Creed is a completely single player game. How can Ubisoft plan to deal with those consumers who aren’t online and picked up the game expecting a polished experience?
