Jam Sessions ad makes with the funny (Audio NSFW)
The above ad for Ubisoft’s Jam Sessions is possibly the greatest game advertisement I have ever seen; better than the ads for Gears of War (Mad World), Halo 3 (Believe), and “Wii would like to play”. I’m stilling trying to regain my breath. As far as I know, it’s a real ad and New Zealanders are fantastic.

Wow, talk about a gigantic step backwards in the battle of having video games taken more seriously as a medium. I’m not being some pussy who is offended by the commercial, and I thought it was mildly funny, in a sort of ‘HIT ON HEAD’ kind of way, but this takes the most asinine approach to convey that you’ll get the feeling of being a rockstar. I’m sure someone will strike the cliche and say that it does it’s job because it stirs controversy and gets people talking about it, but there is such a thing as negative press, and it does hurt more than helps; just ask PETA.
All in all, it’s just tacky.
BTW, am I the only one who absolutely hated the Gears of Wars ad? That music seemed as out of place as playing death metal during a preview to Lost In Translation.
You make a good point Morty. I was just thinking of it in a more narrow scope, where a kid cursing at his mom i always good for a laugh.
I don’t really think it’s a step backwards - I don’t see how this commercial could hurt someone’s view of video games. If anything, it hurts the image of rockstars.
If someone already has established a loving relationship with their games (sickos) then I’m sure it won’t deter them. But for someone kind of ‘on-the-fence’ on the medium, who may or may not get a game for their kids (which this game is aimed for, isn’t it?) or the Roger Eberts out there who can’t take it seriously as it is, this certainly won’t help. At the most basic and obvious (and stupid), is that some of these people will see ‘If I buy this game, then my kid will be a foul mouthed bastard”.
But what I think some may see, and this is kind of how I felt, is in that the message of conveying that the kid will act like a rock star totally missed the mark. Does swearing define a rock star? I can think of about 10 other professions or labels that could have been conveyed out of that. There’s so many different ways they could have illustrated that you can become an ‘instant rockstar’ than having the kid turn into a bipolar juvenile saying ‘fuck’ three times in 5 seconds. It’s an immature way to establish that point, and could have been done more tastefully; to me its shock value for the sake of shock value. If it were for a different game, then I wouldn’t have minded so much, provided the game was already a Mature rated title focusing on being a little sailor-mouthed brat or something of the like.
While I can’t disagree with your points, Morty, I thought it was hilarious. I didn’t expect it, I guess.
