Will EA never learn? Only chumps pay for cheats

Electronic Arts just doesn’t get it. After asking people to pay real money for cheats in both Tiger Woods and Need for Speed: Carbon and giving gamers the privilege of paying real money to spend game money on weapons in The Godfather, the public was pissed. Why pay for something when you can unlock it with some determination and a little bit of elbow grease?
Well, just like last year, those capitalists at EA are at it again, releasing cheats for Need for Speed: ProStreet. But wait! This time, they’re insulting the consumer’s intelligence by telling us that we don’t need it! Let’s look at the newest DLC items:
Content: Ultimate Performance Bundle
Price: 800 Microsoft Points
Availability: All Xbox LIVE regions
Dash Text: [ESRB: E10+ (Everyone 10+) SUGGESTIVE THEMES] Don’t leave anything to chance. This ultimate performance bundle immediately unlocks EVERY performance package in the game. After you get the parts, the rest is up to you! Note: all parts can be achieved without purchase by progressing through Career. There are no refunds for this item. For more information, see www.xbox.com/live/accounts.
Let me repeat that last sentence:
All parts can be achieved without purchase by progressing through Career.
Your eyes don’t deceive you. EA is telling you that you don’t need this DLC. What gamers are essentially doing is buying an unnecessary unlock key. Between all of the content available, you could shell out an extra $25 for items that are already on the disc. I’m no economist, but laying down $85 for something that really only costs $60 is poor shopping.
If you download this content (if you can call it that), you deserve a swift kick in the face.

Honestly, I can’t be too upset at EA for trying to pull this. Yeah, it’s stupid, but it’s not like they have anything to LOSE by doing it (aside from the respect of hardcore gamers, and they probably know they lost THAT a long time ago). Meanwhile, they can only gain from this, because even if only a few thousand people download this, at ten bucks a pop, they’re making tens of thousands of dollars for basically doing nothing. I’d do that too, given the opportunity. So it’s not really EA’s fault; it’s the people who actually download this stuff’s fault.
Hell yeah, and it’s not even just EA… Sega has started pulling this bullshit as well. VF5 Online charges 300MSP for an unlock key leading to new customization options… and you can’t even unlock that shit by playing the game.
I think the idea of paying for something that is already on the disk is just plain moronic! I’ve paid the $60 freaking bucks for the game, if I don’t have the time or the inclination to get at it by playing through career mode, then that’s my call.
Games are supposed to be fun, an entertainment medium. They are missing this important point. They are instead trying to “force” us to slog through a crappy game to get the content, or pay more for stuff that we’ve already paid for.
EA should be kicked in the nuts. Repeatedly.
Extremely well put, Grazen. I agree wholeheartedly.
