September NPD numbers are in: Xbox 360 is the new Wii

By zizzy

The NPD sales numbers for September are in, and thanks to Halo 3 the Xbox 360 is on top. However, while the Xbox 360 may have sold the most, the Wii isn’t far behind, and still managed to break 500,000 units. Trailing very close behind that is the Nintendo DS, followed by Sony’s systems. First the PSP, which is pretty far behind the DS, then the PS2, and finally the PS3 at the end. Here are all the number filled details:

  1. Xbox 360 - 527.8K
  2. Wii - 501K
  3. Nintendo DS - 495.8K
  4. PlayStation Portable - 284.5K
  5. PlayStation 2 - 215K
  6. PlayStation 3 - 119.4K

The software sales clearly indicate why the Xbox 360 beat all other consoles - Halo 3. Despite the fact it was only available at the end of September, it outsold all other games by a huge margin and helped the 360 outsell the other platforms. In total, there were 4 Xbox 360 games, 2 Wii games, 2 Nintendo DS games, 1 PS2 game and 1 PS3 game in the top ten:

  1. HALO 3 (360) - 3.3 million
  2. WII PLAY W/ REMOTE (Wii) - 282K
  3. LEGEND OF ZELDA: PHANTOM HOURGLASS (DS) - 224K
  4. MADDEN NFL 08 (PS2) - 205K
  5. SKATE (360) - 175K
  6. MADDEN NFL 08 (360) - 173K
  7. METROID PRIME 3: CORRUPTION (Wii) - 167K
  8. BIOSHOCK (360) - 150K
  9. BRAIN AGE 2: MORE TRAINING IN MINUTES A DAY (DS) - 141K
  10. HEAVENLY SWORD (PS3) - 139K

Overall, it was a good month for the gaming industry, with the total video game sales at $1.36 billion, 74% over last year’s $778.7 million for the same month.

Console hardware sales saw an even bigger increase of 188%, making $418.6 million as opposed to last year’s $145.5 million. Portable hardware sales also increased, although by a much smaller amount, making $126.25 million - 28% up from last year’s $98.4 million. Video game accessories made $157 million, which is 76% up from the $89.5 million seen a year ago.

Software sales made $550.5 million, and the 64% increase over last year’s $335.8 million was mainly from Halo 3’s outstanding sales. Portable software sales were at $103.1 million, which is a 6% decrease from the $109.6 million made last year.

Now that’s enough statistics and numbers for now - go ahead play everything you bought last month, since that’s what made these numbers what they are - or at least made an incredibly small, insignificant and unnoticeable difference. Just know that plenty of rich company heads are living life to the fullest thanks to your empty wallet.

3.3 million copies of Halo 3 in 4 days? Jesus H. Christ.

I have a friend who was one of the people who bought an XBox 360 just for Halo 3. Sad, because there are other good games on the thing.

Why is it sad…it’s not like now that he has Halo 3 he can’t buy anything else. It’s a game that makes people want an Xbox 360, and once they have one I’m sure they’ll eventually buy all the other great games.
