Toshiba bringing stand alone HD DVD players for under $200?

By zizzy

Back when the HD DVD drive for the Xbox 360 was announced, it was advertised as the cheapest HD DVD player at only $200. The only problem was that it was a drive, not a stand alone player, so while it was a pretty good deal for those who already owned 360s it wasn’t accessible to everyone and stand alone players were still much more. While the price of both the drive and Xbox 360 itself have gone down, making the leap to HD DVD, or Bu-ray for that matter, is still pretty expensive.

However, as with any technology prices are continuously going down - and if listings in the Wal-Mart system are correct, a new milestone is about to be reached. In the High Def Forum, a user who works at Wal-Mart says that a new Toshiba UPC showed up in the system for a player costing only $198.00. A stand alone HD DVD player for under $200 that’s made by a major company is definitely good for HD DVD, and might be just what’s needed for people unsure if they are ready to switch to a new format.
