Nintendo Becomes 2nd Most Valuable Stock in Japan; Closes in on Godzilla Stock
Hide the women and children, the fanboys riot in the street! Nintendo has now earned the title of the second most valuable company in all of Japan. The epic success of the DS and the Wii boosts Nintendo to the top of the heap in Japan.
Since Godzilla’s share is invaluable to Japan’s economy and unavailable for trade in the market, Nintendo is now only second in value to Toyota, the world’s most profitable automaker as Nintendo’s value is still just only one-third of Toyota’s 24 trillion yen. Nintendo’s shares closed up 3.1% at 59,200 yen on Tuesday, which brought its market value to 8.39 trillion yen.
Technically, the market value of Mitsubishi UFJ Financial Group Inc., Japan’s largest bank, is potentially bigger than that of Nintendo, but trading in its shares has been suspended this week ahead of a market share split. MUFG’s market capitalization on the last day of trading came to 11 trillion yen.
Regardless, Big N’s shares have more than quadrupled over the past two years as the momentum shows little sign of slowing down, especially as more developers and publishers flock to their platforms. In addition, the anticipated releases of Super Smash Bros. Brawl and Super Mario Galaxy add even more fuel to the fire flower.
This news also comes at a surprise since Sony’s PSP overtook the DS, Wii, Xbox 360, PS3, and PS2 in sales last week in Japan. The release of Crisis Core: Final Fantasy VII is the direct cause for this surge in Japanese unit sales. Sure, it’s happened before, but with the increasing competitiveness in recent years, this one seems extra crispy.
